Starting Pitcher Poll #2: Will Any Other SP -EVER- Make 250?

Post by RonCo » Mon Dec 21, 2020 11:29 am

SP Poll #1 asked if Arthur Dempster would make 250.

Looking down the leaderboard, we see only a few other active pitchers in the top 100 All-time: Cisco Morales (37 and apparently done) sits at 198, Jubal Troop (34) at 188, and Dave Martin (36) at 182. That's it. Add this to the latest craze of pitch counts and of big inning relief pitchers, and you've got a situation where the Win is a tough stat to collect.

Of course, I'm thinking about Carlos Valle right now, who is at 172 Wins and 31 years of age. But I'm not sure what to think about that. There are also a lot of great young-gun starters coming through the ranks. So the question is: Will Any pitcher ever again crest the 250 win plateau, and if so, who?

Phil Cole maybe. But it requires being on very successful teams for a very long time, because to do it in a 15-year career you have to average 17 wins.

Im with Ted on this. I don't have a name in my head but I choose yes simply because there will be a guy...obviously not very often though.

I say yes, mostly because with 78 to go, and at age 31, I'm hoping Valle can get there. :)

In addition, I agree the EVER is a long, and I figure the BBA will be around for a long, long time.

So, you didn't specify whether you were restricting it to BBA, UMEBA, or "both". So Bucharest had 3 SP draft picks last year (two 17-yo and one 18-yo) that both went immediately to the majors. All three already have OVR of at least 55, one has 70 POT, one 65. They all could easily have 16 year careers which would require an average of 15.6 wins per year to get 250 wins (and their careers could be longer than that). If any of them have 20 year careers (which is possible) they would only need to average 12.5 wins per year. For this year, Praveen is on track for 23 wins (only nine in his abbreviated season last year), Fenomore for 15 (after getting 12 in 3/4 year last season) and Geddes for 15 (after getting 12 abbreviated last season).

The only question is: Are you restricting it only to BBA players? If so, they wouldn't qualify, since they are in UMEBA. And if you are restricting it to UMEBA, these are good enough players that we might not be able to afford their salaries when they get to free agency. So they might have careers in both BBA and UMEBA.

So, it depends on how your question is defined.

i presume he was just limiting to BBA, but that is a fair point.

...brings up the point should we vote UMEBA players into the HOF? 🤔

Can of worms, opened. It comes down to whether our HOF is a BBA HOF or more like the Basketball HOF which isn't restricted to the NBA. I think we might actually have EBA HOFers, but I'd be in support of a BBA only HOF, if only so it doesn't get murky. What do you do with a guy who flams out of the BBA at age 26 and goes on to have a 10 year, 60 WAR UMEBA career? Should a dude who couldn't' hack it in the BBA get to be in with the best of the best from it? Give the UMEBA it's own Hall. Or make it clear that this is the UMEBA wing of the HOF, and vote for the players separately on different ballots. Should BBA GMs even be voting for the UMEBA Hall?

There are so many issues that separate just seems better.

I agree, but They don't have one yet. Do we wait for 10 seasons of UMEBA before open one?

I would expect a UMEBA HoF sometime soon. We had a EBA one at one point, so I don't see why we wouldn't have a UMEBA one. I would expect it to be separate from BBA, but just as cool.

The question of UMEBA pitchers making 250 wins is a good one. Honestly, I just hadn't looked at it. :bag:

Cole may have the best bet of the young crop of guys coming in. Of course my sentimental favorite would be Scott Davis. :)

There are 4 batters in the BBA HOF based on EBA production.

Cole’s debut in Triple-A - 11 innings pitched, ONE hit allowed, four BB, eight K’s and . . .
