30 Points to Create a Player

Recent talk on the forums has me pondering the type of player I prefer, so I put together this poll to get everyone's thoughts on the matter. You get to use 30 points to distribute among the five batting categories. That hitter is then duplicated nine times. How do you build him?

This all depends a lot on league environment. I can see a league where I take any one of these first.

I agree with Ted, but in the very generic spirit of the question it would be either #1 or #3 with a slight guess that a team full of #1 would score more runs than a team full of #3. It would probably be close, though. Might be fun to do a neutral test league and see what the engine actually does.

I'd personally be as balanced as possible. I do agree with Ted that the league settings and ballpark construction is important. That being said, I try and match up within the division and combine the ballpark my team is in with the ballparks I am likely to play in the most.

I'd probably go with a customized mix, but in the spirit of the idea, I'll go 6's across the board if it's a team of duplicates. Although, I think it's good to have a balance of each type of player.

#2 is the Brad Parkinson special and that doesn't seem to be working out for me so far

How about like a Cliff? 9-9-10-1-1
I think 9 guys in the lineup built like that would beat the other 3 you listed.
But if I'm picking one of your three, then 1 or 3 are probably better than 2. And I'm taking 3 if forced to pick.

What about 9/10/1/9/1 or 9/1/10/9/1? Should be a really good OBP, tons of XBH. Not sure how the crippling number of K's will play out. This would not be great in our league, but might be better than these other options in a default OOTP league. If it's too many K's, maybe cut everything back by 1 and put the rest into avk. i.e. 8/1/9/8/4.

I'd say 9/1/9/10/1.
I think I said that on the other post as well before it was removed since you created like 4 of the same poll haha.

It would be interesting to see if you could even have a 9 contact with a 1 AVK. Need to go to the editor and do some playing.

Good question. I kind of was thinking the BABIP would have to be pretty stupid high for that to work.
Even if you can't have 9 con with 1 avk, this is still the way to go. Let's say the highest con/lowest avk combo is 7/3, you;d just take 7/1/10/9/3 or whatever it works out as.

A quick run through the editor says that a 1 AVK means there is no way you could have a 9 contact.

A 1 Power, 1 BABIP, and a 250 AVK gets you a three contact. This makes sense again when you realize the raw number discrepancy in the number of strike outs that can exist relative to the number of home runs that can exist.

1/1/26/1/1
This can't be created because 26 power (which is attainable and is the max in ootp21) makes you have 6 con even with the internal ratings for everything else set to 1/250.
So it makes this player 6/1/26/1/1, which in a default OOTP league projects to .278/.281/1.107 for a 1.388 OPS.
Line is projected to be 552 PA, 550 AB, 153 hits, 152 homers, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 390 K.
In the spirit of this exercise, if you only can have 30 points, you can make a player who is 4/1/23/1/1.
He projects .247/.250/.967. 552 PA 550 AB, 136 H, 132 HR, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 390k.
Any entire lineup of that player would score around 1200 runs in a season by hitting over 1180 homers and striking out 3240 times.
I think we have a winner.

Thanks, all. I selfishly asked the question purely for the discussion as I'm trying to better understand the mechanics driving the outputs.

For comparison, an 8/1/10/9/2 batter, which is the is closest you can get to the 9/1/10/9/1 because of avk limiting contact:
.296/.415/.569 661 PA 550 AB 163H, 50 HR, 110BB, 1HBP, 250K.
It is entirely possible that this team could outscore the all homer one. I think it probably wouldn't but sequencing could work out that it would.
The real interesting is why the ratings differences make the game project 110 more PA's for the 8/1/10/9/2 batter. I presume it's because the batter with more OBP generates more PA's for his teammates, so the game incorporates that into projecting the line, but I'm not sure.
If it's an error and the all homer lineup gets a similar number of PA's to the OBP/Homer lineup, then the homer lineup crushes the OBP/homer one, and the numbers I posted above are actually low.

You can learn a lot by simply opening a default OOTP league, clicking on "editor" and playing around with the numbers. You just have to remember to take into account that our ratings are both higher in the BBA and skewed towards power and strikeouts.
