Aaron Stone Opt Out?
For those teams that are, barring any super-crazy errors, effectively out of the playoff race already, one of the things you can do with your team is to look forward to next season. Whose contract is expiring? Who has a Player or Team Option? Who has an Opt Out and will they exercise it?
One such players for the Charlotte Cougars is Catcher Aaron Stone. Stone turned 33 this season and has the ability to have two more years left on his contract. Both of the next two seasons are for $15M each. The 2045 season is a Team Option (which would most likely be bought out.) Recent FA signings
Hank Brewer (the 38yo signed a 1 year, $9M deal and
Luis Barrera, a 35yo that signed a 5 year, $71M ($14.2 AAV) deal.
Stone seems to be having a slightly below average year this season, despite a slight decline in his contact and power numbers, and missing 5 weeks with a broken thumb. He also seems to be happy in Charlotte (there has been no complaints and he is generally happy.) Charlotte does have several catchers they seem to be happy and ready to replace Stone with when the time comes.
The question is, when will the time come? Does he Opt Out after this season? Based on the signings above, he most likely will lose a little bit of salary, but he could find himself with a few extra seasons on his contract and actually end up making more.

Re: Aaron Stone Opt Out?
I don't think he will and given that he is basically a DH at this point I don't think he should.

Re: Aaron Stone Opt Out?
No I don't think so. He will be an overpaid DH for the rest of this contract Of course that's my fault, but he will still provide some value for you.

Re: Aaron Stone Opt Out?
Eh. I can live with one more year of his contract. He may still be a little useful as a catcher still too. His "range" may be down (how much "range" do catcher's really need?) but his errors and PBs are still really low. And, he's throwing out 46.4% of runners so far this year - almost 20 points higher than his career average. It wont last, but its better than being 20 points lower and trying to climb up.

Re: Aaron Stone Opt Out?
Wouldn't bet on it unless he puts up really big numbers. Hard to pass up $30 million at age 35 and 36.

Re: Aaron Stone Opt Out?
He'll only be 34 and 35. And, he wont get the last $15M, at least not from me. But, shhhhh, dont tell him.

Re: Aaron Stone Opt Out?
What he doesn't know will cost ya $4 million. I don't think he's giving up $20 million guaranteed either.

Re: Aaron Stone Opt Out?
I'd suggest he not, but a lot depends on how he performs this year. If he thinks he can get multiple years at 7+ in FA then I figure he'll opt out.

Stone, and his $15M for next season (he would not have gotten the 15M team option for 2045) have Opted Out!!

Re: Aaron Stone Opt Out?
Seems like a mistake to me but maybe that popularity boost will give GM's incentive to pay him
