Ballpark Food Challenge - Round 3 (Quarterfinals)

Post by jleddy » Mon Apr 27, 2020 1:43 pm

Congrats to all those who advanced! Remember, you can find all entries at the main post here.

And now, Round 3 match-ups:

BURGER/HOT DOG/SANDWICH REGION

(17) Chicago's "Portillo's Italian Beef Sandwich" vs (9) Calgary's "Hanski's Maple BBQ Brisket Sandwich"
All eyes will be on Chicago after taking down top-seed Madison, but don't look past Calgary: there's just something about bbq brisket that keeps the fans coming back for more.

(4) Nashville's "Bluebird' Best Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich" vs (5) Twin Cities' "The Juicy Lucy Burger"
A real powerhouse of a match-up, so it's a shame one won't be able to advance. Bird or burger? Spicy or juicy? Something tells me a big marketing campaign this week could tip the scale in one's favor.

SNACK/FINGER FOOD REGION

(2) Montreal's "Blazers Blazing Nachos" vs (7) Edmonton's "The Hot Mess"
Who reigns snack food supreme? Both offerings feature over-indulgent, messy, roll-up-your-sleeves experiences. Sure, Montreal has the batting helmet but Edmonton's got the backing of poutine and cheese curd loyalists. A fight to the death, to be sure.

DESSERT REGION WINNER + MISC. REGION WINNER

(3) Portland's "Kate's Kookies" vs (22) San Fernando's "The Jon Reed Messy Burrito"
Wow, you couldn't have two more distinctly different styles. Is a cookie, no matter how delicious and sinful, worthy of a ballpark food Final Four? Can one really enjoy their ballgame experience -- and dignity -- wearing a bib? It'll be interesting to see if the light dessert can take on the heavy Mexican food. This may go down to the wire.

Admittedly nachos are more of a party staple, but you have to see the Edmonton children when the gravy from the poutine erupts in the Hot Mess and shoots out like an oil geyser. Hilarious when the kids get it all over them.

Please note, by purchasing The Hot Mess™ you are waiving the Edmonton Jackrabbits organization and John Ducey Park of any legal liability.

Glad to see that Twin Cities went with the Juicy Lucy from the 5-8 Club instead of Matt's. Portillos vs. Juicy Lucy in the final would be epic. And now I'm hungry.

No sandwich in this bracket brings the heat like the Bluebirds Best Hot Chicken.

Perfect paired with a local brew, and we have three perfect choices:

Rompo Red Rye Ale
5.6% ABV | Jackalope Brewing Co.
We first discovered this beer from our hometown brewery paired well with, of all things, our banana pudding. But that’s not where the pairing potential ends. It has a general sweetness from the rye malt to help cut even our highest heat levels (Damn Hot and Shut-the Cluck Up!!!). It’s not a hop bomb by any means, however, which makes it the perfect pairing for taming our hot chicken.

Chicken Scratch American Pilsner
5.25% ABV | Little Harpeth Brewing
From lager-focused Nashville brewery Little Harpeth, Chicken Scratch is, in our opinion, one of the most drinkable Pilsners you will ever find. This medium straw-colored beer has a hint of sweetness from the corn, which takes a little bit of the bite out of the hot chicken, while its light floral and herbal notes from the use of Cluster and Saaz hops refresh the palate with each sip.

Ananda India Pale Ale
6.1% ABV | Wiseacre Brewing Co.
No beer list is complete these days without a solid IPA. While hoppy beer may not be the first pairing that comes to mind with spicy foods, Wiseacre’s Ananda has a bite that helps you forget about the heat of the hot chicken. But its more juicy than bitter—a thirst-quenching burst of flavor hits the palate thanks to generous dry hopping with Cascade hops

Nice battles. Squeaked that one out.

Portland going to have to break out the “big guns” to advance out of the final 4.
