Why aren't you on slack??

Post by niles08 » Wed Mar 11, 2020 9:10 am

I know forum posting is down and I will admit I was a bit hesitant when the slack announcement came along but I will say that slack has been a very good addition. Forum posting is great but for those of us on Slack, I feel that it has actually brought the community closer together. I have come to know several guys on a more personal level that would have taken years on the forums.

The "general" channel has stuff in it every day that has nothing to do with BBA but rather everyday life. The forums are typically a lot of just BBA related stuff but slack has really had the community thrive in my opinion.

So for those not on Slack, why not?

Dual vote! I like Slack. I find the quicker pace makes me hem and haw less about posting which can lead to interesting discussion paths.

I'm registered and on very seldom. I use it for other leagues but kinda forgot about it as you don't really gain anything unlike posting on forums.

Meh...

I kind of don't like how if you miss a conversation... you have to scroll pages and pages back to pick it up. It's fine for real time conversations and awesome for trade talks.

Actually, for trade talks, it's far superior to the the forums.

I hate how most Apps almost demand 24 hour access for your attention. For the BBA, I check in daily, usually at lunch. Read thread updates, respond to some... then I'm done for the most part.

Between work and family, I'm already connected too much already. Somedays I miss just having a landline and coming home after work to check messages to see who tried to contact me.... lol

That said, I do enjoy Slack for some things. So I'm not completely a lost cause. And as Justin saw yesterday, I have an alert set for some key words, so I'll get a message if there's something going on that I might want to pay attention to. Like everyone making fun of me for trading away Kelly and Newsome... haha

I struggle with getting caught up on conversations as well, especially when I'm working. A definite downside to an IM-style platform.

I don't stay caught up. I just hop in where it's at. Interesting comment on gaining "nothing". While I would support a PPT handout for it, I will disagree and say that you gain a lot. You gain relationships with other GM's and I think that leads to more trades believe it or not.

Yeah, that's a thing. That's what I've discovered about doing the group podcasts as well. It's way easier to talk stuff over with guys once you already have a rapport.

I didn't participate in any group podcasts until I started talking to Brett & Randy on slack. We built some rapport and now I don't shy away from those.

I only join group podcasts so I can open my garage door to annoy Fred.

I talk to Brett on a daily basis. Your garage door doesn't even begin to register on my annoyance radar.

I've been in a lot of leagues that use Slack, and yes, it is good for the here & now, but I've always loved perminancy and slack isn't that. I love the rich history and team news from the ages that you can settle into on the Forums. When I take over a new team (OK, every two or three months lol ;) ) I can wade through pages of history about the team and really get a feel for them.
Slack, and I do read it all, just vanishes into the ether and I do worry it detracts from the forums. I'm happy for us to keep using it, but not to move more things over to it

Who cares about slack. If you want to talk trade or whatever and don't have time to send a PM, then it must not be that important. It's the same reason I ignore event invites on Facebook, even from family.

Yeah I could have worded that better. LOL I mean "gain anything" as in PP. It can definitely come in handy for trade talks.

Think alot of it comes from when I first joined the league I joined both Discord and Slack on top of the forums. It became to much to keep track of, so just focused on the forums. I still check in on slack every once in a while but not as much as I used to when I first joined.

I’m fine with Slack. I mostly just like it for the OOTP integration. It’s a little cleaner than the forums I guess. Maybe I just find it easier to read. Forums are antiquated, but I enjoy them more. Especially debates. More well thought out, long form back and forth detailing each person’s position on a topic. I tend to go a long time without checking slack, maybe joining in the discussion a bit, trolling a little bit, then revert to not talking. I like it during sim time though. I like watching the live sim so the notification is important and something we don’t get without watching the boards constantly.

I think it may be worth noting some of the slack numbers as it's not like "nobody" is using it.

There have been nearly 94,000 messages sent through slack since it was created for the league on 10-14-18. That is roughly 182 posts a day that are made on slack. Some of these 94,000 messages surely are the Autobots that come up during live sims.

It shows there are typically 29 or so active members on a weekly basis on slack so it appears most are on this which is a good sign as forum posting has also stayed relevant and as Ron stated would be a good number had it been just a few years ago.

I am guessing it's probably 50%. I don't think 45,000 messages are anything to sneeze at though. Those don't include any private messages.
