Most Surprising Slow Start (Player Edition)

Post by jleddy » Thu Aug 01, 2019 2:25 pm

The skinny malnourished:
  • Yrrigs Carpenter (San Antonio) - After leading the league in ERA in 2038 (2.70) and winning the Nebraska Award for the Johnson League, the 23-year-old righty is struggling with a record of 4-6 with a 5.26 ERA and has already coughed up more home runs this year (19) than all of last season (17).
  • Juan Karyabwite (Calgary) - The two-time Puckett Award-winner is on-pace to set career lows in AVG, OBP and SLG. After averaging 4.8 WAR per year for his first seven seasons, the Venezualan outfielder is on pace to garner only 0.4 in 2039. Additionally, the four-time Diamond Glove Award-winner has already tied a career-high in errors and is on-pace to have his first season with negative Zone Rating and Efficiency.
  • Emilio Morales (Omaha) - After winning five consecutive Puckett Awards, the third baseman is on pace to have his worst offensive season since 2033. The 29-year-old currently has an OPS+ of 93 after five years of recording at least 122 OPS+.
  • Jaime Ramirez (Louisville) - After making his first All-Star team in 2038 and inking a new six-year deal, the Chilean shortstop is on-pace for a -0.9 WAR season, down nearly four wins from last year. Through 88 games, "Wolverine" is merely slashing .222/.244/.318 and has 57 whiffs to only 7 walks. Additionally, a run of three straight seasons of 60+ stolen bases looks to be over, as he's on pace for only 37 steals.
  • Yunosuke Terada (Boise) - After a breakout campaign in 2038 in which the first baseman slugged 48 HR, collected 5.6 WAR and earned his first All-Star appearance and Puckett Award, "Godzilla" is hitting only .213/.337/.376 and on-pace for -0.1 WAR. Additionally, after recording only three errors at first base and compiling a +10.3 Zone Rating, all which earned him the Diamond Glove Award at 1B, he's already made eight errors on the year and only has a Zone Rating of +0.6.
  • Reece Wareham (Atlantic City) - The English second baseman hit 47 dingers last year and drove in 111 runs, all adding up to a WAR of 4.7. After a lengthy holdout that saw him signed to a one-year deal halfway through spring training, the 32-year-old is slashing a career low .145/.267/.274 (3 HR, 5 RBI) and on-pace for a ghastly -2.0 WAR. After averaging 140 games the last three years, Wareham is on-pace to only see action in 91 games thanks to a torn thumb ligament and back spasms that has caused him to miss nearly five weeks.
  • Brett White (Jacksonville) - After winning a Puckett and making the All-Star team in 2038 (.305/.353/.622), the 23-year-old is struggling to the tune of .224/.301/.399. The outfielder's struggles has him on pace for a -0.2 WAR, which would be a league-high drop of six wins above replacement level value.

Jon Mick!

Back to Back 50 homerun seasons and averaging 150 RBI the last two seasons. .860 Average OPS

2039 = .692 OPS and a WAR of -1.2. That's a NEGATIVE WAR!!!! He's producing 3.2 LESS WINS this year than last year.

Dunno...I think Mick's decline was entirely predictable.

If you retain three quarters of his salary, I will take him off of your hands

A decline that Terada, Wareham and White would gladly take at this point!

You'd have to run that one through Will. I'm not making any major long term decisions with Madison that involve anything major.

Reminds me of Catch-22: "Being born with a sickly resemblance to Henry Fonda was the first of along series of practical jokes of which destiny was to make Major Major the unhappy victim throughout his joyless life. Being born Major Major Major was the second....A lesser man might have wavered that day in the hospital corridor, a weaker man might have compromised on such excellent substitutes as Drum Major, Minor Major, Sergeant Major, or C. Sharp Major, but Major Major's father had waited fourteen years for just such an opportunity, and he was not a person to waste it."
