We're Almost Done I Promise - J.J. McQuade

I'm going to do something new this offseason with free agents, so I figured I'd rack up some easy PP as a way to research the market. It should help you guys to with some questions I'll later be asking you. We've been wondering how good OOTP is at players judging the market when deciding on player opt outs and options. It does feel like a mixed bag so far. So, before we get to the wonderful day where we all figure out who is screwed and who is not so much, let's see what we think. Remember, I'm asking you, SHOULD this player opt out. Not whether you expect them to do so. With each player I ask about, I'll try to give a little background. Feel free to discuss.

JJ McQuade

My favorite player. Not really. Just fun to talk about one of my least favorite deals. So here's the thing, McQuade was a solid defensive SS who put up decent offensive numbers when Ron was really picking his spots. He got a lot of money for a full time gig due to market forces. He'll be 29 next year, and hasn't reached 2 WAR since 2035 in the first year of his deal.

He potentially has three yers left, but only one is guaranteed. Next year he could opt into 12.3 million. Year 5 is for 11.3 with a 3 mil buyout. Year 6 is for 10.3 with a three mil buyout. So he opt in to a minimum 18.3 mil over one year, or 33.9 million over 3 years.

Should he pass that up and go to free agency?

Not much to say here except no - don't opt out, JJ.

Hey Ted, remember to look at Alferdo Bermudez. He should not opt out. Just didn't want to make another poll.

I would be shocked if he opted out but his final quarter of the season with Vancouver was his best period of the season so that could change things.

I'd probably advise him to stick around. The next year's buy-out will spend just fine.
