Should Leon Sandcastle Decide to Become a Free Agent?
I'm going to do something new this offseason with free agents, so I figured I'd rack up some easy PP as a way to research the market. It should help you guys to with some questions I'll later be asking you. We've been wondering how good OOTP is at players judging the market when deciding on player opt outs and options. It does feel like a mixed bag so far. So, before we get to the wonderful day where we all figure out who is screwed and who is not so much, let's see what we think. Remember, I'm asking you, SHOULD this player opt out. Not whether you expect them to do so. With each player I ask about, I'll try to give a little background. Feel free to discuss.
Leon Sandcastle
Father time catches us all. It's just taking a bit longer for Sandcastle. He's played through ticky-tack injuries his entire career, but only managed to get into 77 this year. Still, the 41 year old managed a .258/.365/.450, 109 wRC+, 1.2 WAR year while playing average-ish defense in left. Last year he had similar numbers in 30 more games. Two years ago he was a 4 win player.
Sandcastle has a mutual option for 2038 to pick up 7.5 million more dollars. The buyout on Charm City's side is incidentally 1.875 mil. Charm City is bad this year and will be bad next year.
Should Sandcastle pass up a guarantee of 1.875 mil and possibly 7.5 mil to become a free agent?

I feel like CC is going to buy him out anyone so him opting out on his own would only be costing him the 1.875M for the same result, right? Even if CC keeps him, a 1 year, 7.5M deal is probably close to what he would've gotten on the open market anyway. I agree with the above - absolutely not.

Sandcastle needs to move on over to the UMEBA and play for another 10 years.

guys do you realize he's so old that he wore the Marquette Suns jersey for not just one, but TWO seasons? The Suns haven't existed since 2019.

He's also played in three cities that no longer have franchises.
