RP Convert Juan Martinez?

Post by Lane » Thu Feb 16, 2017 12:58 pm

Juan Martinez has crappy control, but would there be enough improvement in stuff to make him a viable relief option?

I love that every RP conversion decision is crowd sourced now, lol

He'll probably end up 11/7/4 with no -split (since the slider will likely go away). I don't think that is a reliever you want in a really important situation (maybe if he was LH'd, but not RH'd), but its also not one you'd be embarrassed to toss out in the 6th inning, either. Assuming you don't have another candidate you're considering and don't really care about the PP then I vote 'yes'.

This conversion stuff is confusing. I voted no because science guys shouldn't be relievers. Or something.

Yeah I don't really have any other obvious places to spend the PP right now, so that's less of a concern. I think I'm more interested in getting something out of a player who would otherwise just rot away in AAA.

plus one billion on this. Its one thing to not risk a 23/24 year old who could still get lucky and make the jump. But if he is older it may just be worth the gamble.

So in this case, id vote no this year and then probably yes next year.

His walk rate is atrocious. It may get better if his stuff generates more swing and misses, but not enough to be worth it. I'd save the points. You'll always have some great prospect who is a clubhouse cancer or a FA to be that could use a tad less greed down the road. Also, FA is flush with relief pitching right now, so it's not like you don't have another source.

Yeah the control is a concern. I like Ted's suggestion to give it another year. He'd probably be O-K with great stuff and poor control, but maybe not good enough.

It was Brett's suggestion, and how DARE you confuse us! I assume I speak for Brett here as well. Sleep lightly, sir.

Control is by far the least useful rating for a reliever. They are much more susceptible to "burst" scoring than "drawn out" scoring because they don't pitch long in a game and can get pulled and replaced quicker than a starter. That said, 4 CON IS still too low for him to be wildly successful as a reliever, but because he has good "burst" protection (solid MOV, good STU) it is enough to make him viable.
