Mon dieu! Maundu!

Fassil Maundu was born in Kawempe. Uganda just north of Kampala on July 31, 2024. One of seven children, Fassil’s parents were poor, and his father abandoned the family when he was just six years old. He was a good student and fell in love with playing baseball as part of the Ugandan Little League.

He attended the famous Allen VR Stanley Sports Academy where he excelled as a pitcher on the baseball team. Then in 2040 at age 15 he was awarded a grant to go to Denmark and play for the Copenhagen Baseball Club college team. Far away from home and family, he studied and worked hard, but his record playing baseball wasn’t that great. He graduated in 2043 and assumed he would be heading home to look for a job in Kampala.

But wait! Surprisingly the Jerusalem Hebrew Hammers selected Fassil in the tenth round of the 2043 UMEBA amateur draft. Jerusalem signed him with a $75,000 bonus, a fortune to a young Ugandan, and he was off to China to play for Changchun, Jerusalem’s rookie league team. He made the All Star team in 2043. During his two-year stay in Changchun his best game was a five-hit shutout.

In 2045 he was promoted to the Class A Tokyo Magic where he posted an 11-11 mark and appeared in the Far East Baseball League All Star game. He enjoyed his time in Tokyo, especially living in a high rise in the former Olympic Village from the 2021 Olympic Games. In 2046 he earned a ring for helping the Magic win the league championship. Fassil, however, wasn’t around for the playoffs because he had again been promoted, this time to the Buenos Aires Brisas in the AA South American Baseball League. He played for Buenos Aires again in 2047 and was selected to play in the UMEBA All Star Futures Game. He lived in the historic Recoleta barrio and enjoyed every minute there.

His record in College and Professional Baseball:

Hoping for a promotion to AAA in 2048, Maundu’s world was suddenly turned upside down when he was selected in the second round of the 2048 UMEBA Rule 5 Draft by the Cairo Pharaohs. He is now wearing a Pharaoh uniform as the team completes Spring Training. Fassil has a dream that Cairo won’t send him back to the Jerusalem organization and he’ll become a shining star in the Cairo bullpen. You go, Fassil!

So, it’s been quite a journey: Uganda to Denmark to China to Japan to Argentina to Egypt. Quite an odyssey for a young man. At least he’s back in Africa now. Will he ever get to North America? His family in Uganda is rooting for him. We are rooting for him. You should be rooting for him.

Just do it!
