The Strange Journey of Elisue Satino
Player Spotlight of a Journeyman

As the rest (or at least the best) of the UMEBA readies itself for playoff games and postseason glory, today we present to you the story of the strange baseball journey of Eliseu Satino.

Image
Eliseu Satino was born on the ninth of June in 2015 in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. An oddity of circumstances, that event began an odyssey of travel comingled with a checkered baseball career. Satino’s mother Adinah (עדינה in Hebrew) was only seventeen when he was born. She had been sent by her devoutly Jewish but very strict parents in Israel to live with a long lost aunt in Brazil after she became pregnant at sixteen.

Adinah, a promising art student when her studies were rudely interrupted by the pregnancy, named the baby after one of her favorite artist’s, Elisue Meifrèn, a Spanish impressionist popular at the turn of the nineteenth century. She and the baby stayed in Rio de Janeiro for five years, living with her aunt. While attending the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, she met Eduardo Satino, a fellow student. They fell in love and were married when she was a senior. After graduating with a degree in the History of Art in 2020, Adinah, Eduardo, and Elisue emigrated back to Israel where Adinah became an art teacher in the Tel Aviv school system.

Elisue went to public school in Tel Aviv where he fell in love with playing baseball. He was a star on his team in 2029 and 2030 when he was only 14 and 15 years old. Then to his and his mother’s shock, at age 16, he was drafted in the third round of the Brewster Baseball Association 2031 amateur draft by the then Indy Grasshoppers. He signed a minor league contract with a bonus of $230,000. Born in Brazil, brought up in Israel, and now he was off to America.

He started in rookie ball in the Indy organization. In 2033 Indy moved its franchise to Omaha, and he stayed in the Omaha system until 2035. In 2035 he had a banner year in AAA (hitting .344 with 24 home runs and 84 runs batted in). Late that year he was selected by Hawaii in the BBA Rule 5 Draft. Only a few months into his stay in the Hawaii organization, he was released and returned to Omaha. There was apparently some controversy involved, because Hawaii also received catcher Steffen Petersen in compensation.

In 2036 Satino made his major league debut with Omaha hitting .342 in 57 games. He cooled off in early 2037 and was hitting .276 when Omaha traded him to the Las Vegas Hustlers along with left fielder Aymeric Barajas, catcher António Robles, and relief pitcher Poto Tornatore in exchange for catcher Hank Brewer and relief pitcher Manual Orozco.

Elisue went on to hit .326 over 59 games for the remainder of 2037 with the Hustlers. In 2038 he hit .324 and slugged 21 home runs. He was slumping in 2039, hitting just .240, when Las Vegas suddenly traded him along with second baseman Julián Fernández, and starting pitcher Sandro Plumey to Boise for catcher Claudio Pérez and relief pitcher Akihisa Oka.

Elisue hit .286 for the remainder of the season with Boise. He was not offered arbitration and became a free agent. His baseball journey would continue on to Charm City when the Jimmies signed him to a four year deal worth $20 million. From 2040 through 2043 Elisue was a fixture with Charm City, hitting respectively .357, .305, .277, and .301. In 2044 he was hitting just .249 when he was suddenly released in August.

It was Bucharest in the UMEBA that offered him a contract that included first-class airfare from Charm City to Bucharest. He signed a three-year deal for $1.7 million per season. He joined the Impalers and had an immediate positive impact, hitting .374 in his thirty games in the new league. He hit .471 in the playoffs.

.374. .471. Pretty good, you’d think. And yet in 2045 he ended up playing for Bucharest’s AAA team, the Luanda Anglers. He hit .350 but, oddly enough, only appeared in 66 games. At the end of the year he became a free agent. “What next?,” he wondered. In March of 2046 he signed a minor league deal with Louisville back in the BBA. After another long plane ride back to the USA, he was released in June without having appeared in a game. In July he signed a minor league deal with UMEBA’s Baghdad franchise, and he was back on the plane heading to Africa to report to AAA Brazzaville, Baghdad’s AAA affiliate. He got into just 36 games, but shined offensively with a .369 batting average and a .720 slugging percentage.

Was his major league career over? At age 32 he could sure still hit, but he still had those defensive liabilities that limited his opportunities. He considered retirement. After deciding to stick it out one more year, he found himself drafted in another Rule 5 Draft. Shaking his head and wondering about his decision not to retire, he headed for Cairo with at least the guarantee that Cairo couldn’t send him to the minors. He resolved to quit if Cairo sent him back to the Baghdad organization.

And that brings us to this past season. With a plethora of players who were best suited to be designated hitters, Elisue ended up as the starting left fielder for the Pharaohs. Everyone cannot DH. He struggled defensively (-7.1 zone rating), but his bat was as productive as ever. He played in 154 games, something he had never done before. He hit .299 with 14 home runs and a league-leading 60 doubles. He knocked in 94, second best on the Pharaohs.

A true journeyman, Elisue won the “Unsung Hero” award for the Pharaohs. He hopes to be in the lineup when the Pharaohs next take the field in 2048.

That’s a wrap.

I think I must stop idolising defence so much. It doesn’t seem to work out too well in the majors. If you can hit, play them anywhere lol

Let it be noted that Satino proved 60 doubles in 2047 was no fluke. He hit 64 in 2048 breaking his own UMEBA record and upped his average to .315.

There are not ravaged until or unless the players succeed in their new homes.
Hope they do for you.
