Sarge.
I first saw Chip 'Sarge' Saundersplaying for the Allis-Chambers Engines, his bat was decent and a plus. It was his leadership as not only a captain for the Engines but a leader of the pitching rotation, even at that age he was not only well on his way to being a student of the game, he also knew the strengths and weaknesses of his pitchers.
He was drafted in 24 by the Greenville Moonshiners who would later go on to become the Jacksonville Hurricanes with the 7th overall pick, it was a short stop in Greenville a stop that wouldn't get him past rookie ball as the year after he was drafted he was traded to the Atlantic City Gamblers.
It was another short stay but a bit longer than his stay with Greenville but again he never reached the majors with the Gamblers, one reporter asked him if he got disheartened with moving from ball club to ballclub. His reply "I just look at it as furthering my baseball education, the more players I play with, the more coaches I play under the more I learn and the better I'll be prepared when I get to the majors".
He was traded again in 2028, this was his third major league team in four years. His motto when asked about being a minor league journeyman was "silver linings, more teams I play for more I learn, it's all silver linings". However his trade to the Havana Sugar Kings paid off, he finally got his shot at the majors when he shared the catching duties with Tim Payne and Jesus Saucedo, although Saunders got the lion's share with 83 games. Though like Greenville it was another whistle stop tour.
His next trade though was to California, this time though it was a place he would call home for 11 years with the Crusaders. "It felt like home straight from the get go" he would say in an interview.
Saunders and the Crusaders would reach the play offs in all but one season when they were together that being 2031, they would reach the pinnacle of the BBA in 2035 winning the Landis. After a short spell in Brooklyn last season (2041), he was asked why Athens "I've earned around $30m, I'm set for life, I want to give something back to baseball I want to play for the love of the game, give some of my experience to a ball club before I hang my cleats up and retire to my farm in Ohio".
Why 'Sarge' ?
“Sarge went to the school of hard knocks. He fought his way up through the mean streets of Cleveland. As a kid he and his buddies would play war in the backyards of their neighborhood, Americans vs Germans. Saunders always carried a toy Thompson submachine gun but his favorite weapon was throwing hand grenades (rotten apples) at his adversaries. All that throwing paid off and by high school he had the best arm of any catcher in NE Ohio. Never one to back down from a fight, more than once he got thrown out of a game defending his pitchers. No slouch with a bat, Saunders future rests more on his abilities as a leader on the field and his defensive talents.” Kevin Dickson, Calgary Pioneers.

Re: Sarge.
I get that Charlotte is no Yellow Springs, but I'm really surprised that Chip decided on the UMEBA. I offered 100k under what he is making in Athens, but on a one-year deal. Dang! Good luck with him.

Re: Sarge.
The recent "up" in league prestige (or whatever the actual term is) for the UMEBA is really drawing the attention of 'fringe' free agents. BBA GMs will want to act quick each winter for those types of players who will take their talents to the Middle East at a drop of a hat instead of a shorter or minor league deal in the BBA.

Re: Sarge.
I've put in 3 contract offers were the player said he'd had an offer from a BBA team but would rather play for Athens.

Re: Sarge.
It bears repeating, but likely the last great lefty-throwing catcher in the Brewster.

Re: Sarge.
I get it, but that's still a lot of money to leave on the table. Plus, the taxes taken out of your pay in Greece are a lot crazier than North Carolina.

Re: Sarge.
Much appreciated Joe, I saw a lefty/lefty catcher the other day think he must have been a FA but highly doubt he's a Sarge.
Although I picture Sarge married with 3 kids, Athens offers ouzo, dancing and goddess like women what's not to like about Athens

Re: Sarge.
I'm still trying to figure out where Yellow Springs is. Sounds like a town in an old western movie that's in the middle of nowhere New Mexico.
