“Ol Big Head” comes home

Having officially announced his retirement at the end of the 2037 season the 44-yr-old future Hall of Famer Brian Clough who hails from Middlesbrough in the north of England will return to his adopted home,Louisville, in a coaching role.

He was 19-yrs-old when he was drafted second overall in the 2013 first-year-players draft by Louisville. He missed four months of his first pro year with Post-Concussion syndrome but recovered so that just three years later he was a September call-up to the BBA and the following year he was a full-time member of the Sluggers embarking on an extraordinary 21-year BBA career, 19 of which he would spend in Louisville colours. His minor league career saw him picked up a 2015 2B AA Glove Wizard award, a 2016 2B AAA Glove Wizard award and collecting a 2016 Fall League Championship ring with Caracas. In 2015 he was selected to the Double-A All-Star game, 2016 he went to the Triple-A All-Star game and by 2017 he was on his way to the BBA All-Star game. He made the 2018 All-star game before a torn rotator cuff cost him most of 2019. It was to be his last major injury of a career that lasted into his 44th year.

He went on to add another eight BBA All-Star appearances to his first two and finished 3rd in 2021 MBBA JL Sawyer Silk Sliver Slugger Trophy voting before winning his first major BBA award, the 2024 MBBA JL Charles Puckett Golden Bat Award at 2B. On May 22nd, 2028 he scored his 1,000th BBA run and almost a year later to the day (May 17th, 2029) he collected his 2,000th BBA hit. He also picked up his second Charles Puckett Golden Bat Award at 2B that year. 2030 saw him finally pick up a Landis Memorial Series Ring as Louisville beat Las Vegas in seven games. September 10th, 2031 saw his 2,500th BBA hit and in 2032 he missed three months when a torn hamstring required surgery. He recovered though to collect his second Landis Ring when the Sluggers triumphed in six over Charm City along with the Series MVP award.

By now he was 38 was playing almost exclusively first base or DH, the last six years of his career he played just part of 31 games at second and 38 in Left. Niggling little injuries dogged 2033 but he finished 2nd in 2033 BBA FL Comeback Player of the Year voting as he still kept going entering his 40th year in 2034. The 12th of June saw him score his 1,500th run and May 5th, 2035 saw him drive in his 1,000th BBA run before finally just over three months later, on August 21st , he reached that magic milestone of 3,000 career hits. That was the last milestone of his Louisville career as he wasn’t offered an extension at the end of 2035 and after over 2,500 appearances, he left the team as a free agent. He followed his former GM Stu ‘Genius’ Hopkins to expansion Wichita Aviators on a two-year deal, but 2037 the niggling injuries surfaced again and limited him to just 93 appearances in his final year.

So now he has called time on a pro career that stretched from 2013 to 2037, his final BBA tally? 2,712 games, 3,246 hits (currently 10th all-time), 1,112 RBI, 1,724 R, 1,379 BB and a career triple slash of .309/.394/.422. His final WAR total was 73.3. Now he has accepted a post as the Hitting Coach at Louisville’s Triple-A affiliate Missouri Blues. Success in this second phase of his baseball career would surely see a similar role back in Louisville or maybe even a managing role there. GM Laverick said he was pleased to see Brian back at the franchise and would be monitoring his progress in his new job closely. Missouri’s Pitching Coach Yann Manfredi was also a team-mate of Clough’s in the early stages of his career.

I wonder if he's the oldest ever qualifying .300 hitter.

Who's the oldest player ever to play in the BBA?
