Xavier Rangel: Clear Vision for Success

Post by Gareth » Sun Oct 14, 2018 3:41 am

Oshawa, Wisc. - Exotropia is something a lot of teens that have it are embarrassed of, but Xavier Rangel has never been a typical teenager.

“Having a lazy eye made me self-conscious when I was young,” the 18-year-old first round choice of the Blaze says. “But in the end, it was kind of a blessing because it forced me to be outgoing so other kids wouldn’t tease me.”

It was a wise lesson from a child. Kiara, his mother, went on to say how it he always tried to impress wherever he was in order to make up for the apparent disability. As “lazy eyes” are often genetic, they can form vision problems in severe cases. Rangel does not complain about any sight loss, but he did say in an interview with BBN, that one of the reasons he signed with Montreal was the fact they placed an emphasis on their vision specialists when other teams ignored it.

“One GM couldn’t even make eye contact with me. Kept looking down at his notes. It was a sign that Montreal was for me,” Rangel says.

It is not uncommon to see players with contacts or even glasses out on the field. Rangel grew up bespectacled on the fields and will not hesitate to do it in Montreal. He will do anything which is exactly what general manager Gary Bartle needed to hear when he selected the center fielder in this year’s amateur draft.

“I’m not worried about Xavi’s development at all. He’s a good kid with the skills to succeed,” Bartle says. “I’d like to see him turn into the quarterback of the outfield, but if he’s covering as much grass for us in a few years as he does now, it’ll just be assumed the ball is his.”

Growing up is Pasho, Wash. the Rangels were actually diehards of another team from the north.

“The Mounties were great. Then I was born and brought bad luck like my uncle used to tease me about,” Rangel says. “Now that Montreal will be my future home, if I’m lucky and work hard, then my uncle will be really disappointed when I bring more bad luck to any team that isn’t Montreal.”
