In the recent 4-3 win over the Vancouver Mounties, Hawk right fielder Gilberto Pacheco wore a mic for Halifax station CIHF which was telecasting the game back to Halifax. Here is a synopsis of Gilberto’s day with excerpts from the mic transcript:
Pre-game in dugout to CF Lightnin Hopkins:
“Remember, man, shade way towards left to help Edgar (Edgar Jones); I got your ass in right center.
Pre-game in dugout to the game’s starting third baseman Luis Hernandez:
Hey, dude. Level swing, follow through. We need your bat. Hardy (Eric Hardy) just ain’t making contact.
Second inning to umpire in an undertone on second pitch being called a strike:
“Like that was outside by six inches! Stick your head in there”
To Mountie first baseman Pedro Burgos after singling on next pitch:
“I better just swing and get on; the ump gave me a real dirty look on that last pitch. His ears are better than his eyes.”
Continuing discussion with Burgos as Luis Hernandez is at plate:
“If Johnson (Jason Johnson) throws me that pitch next time, it’s outta here!!”
To no one in particular in dugout as Vancouver bats in the third and takes the lead:
“Jesus, Burgos almost got that one out; gotta come from behind now”
To Burgos again as he passes first base after two-run homer in the fourth inning:
“I told you, man! Hope he keeps throwing that basketball looking slider”
To pitcher Johnson as he steps to plate in the 5th:
“Hey, Jason, throw me the slider! Dare ya!”
To first baseman Burgos after his third consecutive hit, a single:
“Jeez, he’s an idiot! He threw it again. I’d be in HOF if I could face him every time.”
To Hawk pitcher Sancho Delgado as Cisco Guerrero hits first pitch in seventh into the seats off reliever Angel Calderon:
“Hey Sancho! Cisco got it all! The Cisco Kid! All we gotta do now is hang on.”
To nobody in particular in dugout as Vancouver bats in eighth:
“Man, I love it here in Halifax! Ocean air! “Hitters park! Oh, we’re in Vancouver? Whatever! They got ocean too. Don't they? All Las Vegas had was sand. And money.”
To 2B José Rivera after he dives for and snags a wicked line drive to end the game with the tying run on third and winning run on second in the last of the ninth:
“Nice catch on that pop-up dude! Put it in the win column”
To closer Tommy Gardner as he left the field after surviving a shaky ninth and getting the save:
“Way to mow ‘em down, Tommy! You sure had their number. He He. Hey, it’s a save in the books for you.”
To anyone listening in the clubhouse:
“I got Player of the Game”? What’s that worth? Ooooh, maybe an interview with the TV color babe? She’s hot!”
