SP David Klopp, future HoF'er

Post by trmmilwwi » Fri Jan 03, 2014 4:14 pm

Fans in Phoenix are wondering what will happen with their favorite player veteran pitcher David Klopp.
Image
At 37 years old Klopp is coming off of his worst season as a professional ballplayer when he had a 6.62 ERA over 70+ innings. Klopp started his professional career in 1996 when he was a 20 year old starting pitcher in the Phoenix farm system. He enjoyed success during 7+ seasons with Phoenix and was selected to the 2002 all star game when he had a 17-5 record with a 3.65 ERA. In 2003 he was traded by Phoenix to Montreal where he played 4+ seasons. He was selected to the 2004 all star game as a blazer when he went 22-5 with a 3.02 ERA. In 2007 he was traded by Montreal back to Phoenix (amazingly with Cleo Blanco again going to the opposite team!). He has been pitching in Phoenix since and also made the all star team in 2009 when he went 15-12 with a 3.71 ERA.

Now, at the age of 37, he has a new GM to deal with and questions will need to be answered. Is his 2013 performance as a reliever an indication of dropping talent levels? Does Klopp have another comeback in his arsenal? Will the new GM allow this future Hall of Famer to finish out his career for the team that made him a star?

I'd say that Klopp is precisely right on the edge of "Not" a Hall of Famer...but just barely over that edge.

Not a HOF. And in all honesty, I don't think he even gets close to making it.

Maybe the PHX/YS9 Hall of Fame... it will give the bustling town of Yellow Springs something other than the Andy Griffith show to talk about.... ;)

Oh, if 12-15 is close then yeah he'll be close. I don't really consider that close however. I see close as guys like Dwayne Johnson.

No way is he a Hall of Famer. The 4.07 ERA looks really bad, even when adjusted to ERA+.

The strikeout total is nice, but there's not enough there to support a HOF case.

Hah... I forgot the 'NOT' in there! The context clues of quoting your negative response and adding "if Moonie even puts him on" could've tipped you off, though. :P

If Klopp is 'close' then I'm going to go rev up the Zach Brown HOF engine now since he is only 9.5 WAR behind him, atm, with considerably more career left to play (will easily finish with +10-15 WAR over Klopp if he plays 'til 37 as well since he averages 5ish/season).

I think an intersesting case is going to be Ramon Ayala. Is he a hall of famer with hall of fame stuff? NO! But if he can manage 29 more wins (possible if he signs on with a competing team) he'll reach 250 for his career. Only 7 MBWBA guys have 250 wins and all 7 are either in the Hall of Fame or are locks to be in the Hall when they retire. But can a guy with 250 wins and 250 losses get into the hall of fame? haha

Nah...it was the right move at the time Mike. You were going for it and needed a top SP.

Very true. It just didn't work out like I'd hoped. There was a lesser known team from Madison always blocking the way. ;)
