Worst Trade you've ever made?

Was kind of curious if you guys have ever made a deal that completely backfired for you? For me so far it would have to be trading away SP Stan Barnett to Omaha for SP Haravira Chandar before the 2055 season. My thought process was that I needed a new #2 with the departure of SP Mahad Einan in free agency to Edmonton.

Chandar would get injured the entire spring training, pitch in the opening game only to immediately hurt his shoulder after one inning pitched and was subsequently out for 2 months. He would pitch just a total of 6 games for me and finished with a 1-0 record, 4.79 ERA, -0.1 WAR before being dealt away to Edmonton.

Barnett has just received a call-up to the big leagues in Omaha and should be a potential 4 or 5 starter in the league for the foreseeable future. So yeah, giving away a potential starter for a guy that pitches just 6 games doesn't look good for me.

Would love to hear some more stories if you've done a deal that you regretted.

May 12, 2043. I needed a CF that could play defense and hit. I made a deal with Louisville for Ronnie Hubbard, Alberto Castaneda and $5 mil and sending Luis Mendoza, OF Doeke Soethout, et al.

Hubbard give me two good seasons and won't re-sign, Castaneda pitched 11 seasons in Hawaii going 50-28 with 43 saves and a 3.95 ERA. They both helped in the 2043 and 44 playoff teams.

Mendoza was Mendoza. 75+ WAR and counting.

Wow the way his ratings jumped up afterwards. At least Castaneda was productive for you for a decade plus.

Don't feel bad. I once gave away Roelof Klooster (still an 80-rated catcher at age 37) just to get rid of a deadweight contract.

The list of bad Talons trades is long, and distinguished. (Cue Top Gun reference...)

Mine was Alfredo Martinez in 2036. After winning a Landis in my first season, followed by 10 years of mediocrity, I grew frustrated and decided to give it everything I had and worry about the consequences later.

Not only did I lose this trade on WAR 4.2 to 85.5, I didn't even make it to the Landis(Brewster),I also took on Martinez's contract entirely over what my budget was. Plus, this trade made me good enough to lose valuable draft position for the two greatest draft classes in the history of the BBA in 37 and 38.

The players I gave up were Jose Zuniga, Dan Flores, and Rocky Allen(an unknown at the time). I knew it was terrible at the time. I was just intent on trading away all my prospects. I was trying to hold one of them out to swap in a different deal and the old Jacksonville GM was giving me the used car salesman pitch that Flores was nothing more than a backup and Zuniga was a bat you could pick up on the waiver wire. I was like c'mon man I just want Martinez, don't try to make me feel stupider than I am.

Oh man.... too many to name.

The one that comes to mind is Luis Maldonado for Jody "No Pants" Nunez and Albert Ganoa.

All because I was attached to Steve Dempsey and let the younger Maldonado go in a trade for a pitcher. Maldonado went on to win a Silk Award and numerous other awards. Nunez and Ganoa did nothing!

Nope! That was a two-parter and had too many players to process in one deal. (Would have never traded him for Greer.)

Oh wow. I never realized this trade happened. Kinda always thought Mendoza came up in Louisville’s system through IC.

I feel like you made this post as bait, but I’ll bite. It may just be recency bias, but trading Frost and Gutierrez for Walker was a bummer of a deal. Frost was coming off a few down seasons. I thought he was done and with Mendoza available in FA, I just wanted to clear his salary. Walker was a decent prospect at the time, but has since lumped and will be lucky to find his way into a bullpen one day. Of course Frost and Guti excelled in Vancouver and I whiffed on Mendoza due to financial restraints due to the IFA debacle. What makes this trade worse was I was forced to trade for Brickell to play 3B. I gave up a decent prospect (Landry I think) and Brickell was awful.

What's up with Mendoza's retirement in 2042-2043?

I'm in my sixth season so any prospects I've traded might still be developing, although I've mostly been the one dealing veterans and receiving prospects back. My biggest problem has been taking too light of a return in exchange for talented veterans. My first trade in the league dealt Ángel González for essentially a bag of balls. I now realize that even on an expensive one-year contract I should have done better for such an elite talent.

Or you could say my worst trade was sending Arvin Duggan to Charm City since that seemed to cement their dynasty roster.

It came at a pivotal moment in his development that makes his leap forward look even more dramatic since there isn’t a 2043 scouting report.

Hook, line and sinker! Just kidding. I was actually telling my friends about my dumb trade so that got me thinking about what other trades were bad too. And hey Walker could still pan out!

Mike Swanson comes to mind.

Something about Elliot Buckland, too.

i hate to remember this, but...

08/26/2038 Felipe Vega traded by the Long Beach Surfers to the Brooklyn Robins in exchange for RF Santiago Sánchez.

Vega played 12 seasons and totaled 58 WAR with Brooklyn.

Sanchez played 241 games with Long Beach and totaled 0.0 WAR.

Spectacular.
