DMS/JAX Best/Barkin trade

Post by pandan » Sat Nov 19, 2022 9:39 am

Des Moines gets:
SP Stephen Best (ML)
SS Larry Barkin (ML)

Jacksonville gets:
2B Ka'im Muntasir (ML)
SP Bob Anderson (AAA)
SP Derek Dyce (AAA)
1B Tyson Barber (AAA)
LF Pedro Hozven (AA)
SP Fatin Asad (A)
^^ Less than 24 hours after taking over GM, had 2 offers come in for the combo of Best and Barkin.

I liked both players a lot, but felt JAX wasn't going to be in a position to win with these 2. My feeling on it was that I'd offload a pitcher I likely wouldn't re-sign (Best), and that I could get value back for Barkin (who I really liked) and was on a cheap contract. Felt this haul was a good way to spread risk around and give me some options to rebuild the farm and get ready for serious contention in a few years.

Was not easy to evaluate the 2 offers -- I wish I could've combined parts from both of them LOL. But overall I felt this was a fair deal. Anderson is coming back from UCL injury, but there's enough here to offset him potentially not being as effective as advertised.

Would love to get some perspective on this deal as a new person. Thanks.

I don’t think you received any high impact players in return, but quantity may play well here. Better to get something than nothing because I agree Jacksonville isn’t going anywhere this season.

I think he did very well, in the context of a prospect pool league-wide that is short on talent and upside.

Whenever I think of Larry Barkin, I can't help but think of Shris Cabo, a friend of Larry's who unfortunately never made it into the BBA universe due to a freak goggles accident.

Overall, this is a fair trade, especially for a team looking to retool like Jax. Des Moines is in a position to push for a playoff spot, so this makes sense for them also.

Anderson is the main get for Jax. He’s a nearly developed RHP with a great reverse split with room to improve. I’d consider trading for him one for one for Best (and Best’s one year of service left on his contract) if I was looking to retool.

That leaves the other five players for Barkin. It’s a big quantity haul for a middle of the road SS, unfortunately all five look to be higher-end AAAA players (without an unforeseen blessing from the Bump Fairy). Muntasir is a serviceable second baseman, and Hozven needs to hit well enough to be worthy of a DH spot or clumsy 1B.

A good, decent trade by both teams. Boring, actually, which is a good sign for your first trade in the league.

You did a lot better for yourself than my first trade in this league.

It can be difficult maximizing trade return when you HAVE to sell like JAX, so I think you did ok for yourself. Best is only one year and Barkin is only an above average player, not a stud.

the tricky thing for Anderson is the UCL injury he is currently recovering from. I paid a bit extra to compensate for that.

Not ideal but still does not change my opinion. He definitely deserves a kicker if it was just a one for one trade like I mentioned.

Yeah that’s why I think quantity might actually play on his favor here. At least one of those players will probably be an impact player in a few years, even if they don’t look it now.
