November, 2038:
The Talons had just squeaked into the playoffs in 2038 with a .500 record, and were eliminated in the first round as usual. Their left fielder, veteran Jean-Luc Lacaze, had left as a free agent. Lacaze had been a cool story for the Talons, enjoying a bit of a career resurgence in 2036-37, but had faded badly in '38 and the Talons bid him adieu. This left the club short of a LF, and they wanted a young, cost controlled LF who could fill in immediately and hit for power.

Yellow Springs was just beginning thier amazing run, which continues to this day. Their 2038 squad had won 99 games, but the middle infield was a bit nondescript, and the Nine could see the need for some new blood as their run matured. They had a surplus LF available in Colon, who could hit for power, but his limited range did not fit in with the team standard for defense. And they saw something in Tyler that the Talons did not: a future at third base.

Speaking of surplus, that's what Tyler (seen as a 2B) was to the Talons at the time. Taken in the supplmental second round of the 2038 draft, Tyler was the 76th overall pick that had power potential, but only average contact ability. He was surplus at 2B because the Talons had 23 year old Arturo Barron, who was in the middle of his run of four straight 30 HR seasons and had just won the first of his three Zimmer Diamond Gloves.

The Nine put out a message on the league trade block, and the Talons responded quickly, seeing a chance to trade a surplus part for a minimum salary hitter they needed to quickly fill in for a departing veteran player. The Talons looked past Colon's questionable defense, and just wanted a power bat to keep the lineup intact. Meanwhile, the Nine played the long game, knowing Tyler wasn't close to ready but willing to wait. And, let's face it, Tyler's subsequent bumps only helped the cause.

Results:
Jose Colon did in fact step into LF for the Talons in 2039, and responded with an encouraging season in which he hit 35 home runs and was third on the team with 97 RBI. Just barely average defense, however, limited his WAR to 1.5. The Talons did once again make the playoffs in 2039, taking the division with a 92 win campaign. Colon was relegated to part time status the next season, as the club acquired a LF with better speed and contact ability. He later returned to full time action in 2041 and struggled, and it wasn't until the following season that he truly contributed with a 2.5 WAR in 2042. Unfortunately, he recorded a negative WAR in 2043, was traded to Edmonton, and hasn't seen the major leagues since.

Tyler, meanwhile, slowly rose up the BBA prospect board, reaching #30 by 2042. His debut that season went decently well, and he actually spent most of his time at 1B, splitting the remainder at second and third. The next season, he was named the full time 3B for the Nine and responded by hitting 26 home runs in a 2.1 WAR campaign. 2044 was another great year as signs of Tyler's developing ability to get on base started to show through. A 3.8 WAR season was to follow in 2045, as the Nine continued their regular season success. In 2046, he enjoyed further success when the Nine sought to upgrade their pitching, and the 3B was sent to Las Vegas, who were just beginning a run of dominance of their own. Tyler amassed 4.3 WAR that season and is on his way to another 4 WAR year and playoff appearance once again in 2047.

Unfortunately for the Talons, 2039 ended up being the last time the club would make the playoffs, despite the recent near misses. Colon was a bit player, who could really only hit for power, something that the Talons of the era had plenty of already. The Nine were patient, and saw Tyler's debut coincide with an amazing run of 90 and 100 win seasons, and even now the highly regarded third baseman is helping yet another franchise (LV) return to the playoffs multiple times.

For TN purposes, is this a trade analysis or recurring feature? You’re good at this trade thing.

No way, recurring features are worth less. Herb did a trade analysis series earlier and it looked like they counted for 8 points each. My inspiration lol!

I also love to look back at trades I’ve made that didn’t go as planned. I’m a glutton for punishment
