Who Won The Trade? Enrique Gomez for prospects

Madison received:
Enrique Gomez

Omaha(Mexico City) received:
P Denis Pham
P Jae-ik Pak
P Ruben Vargas
P Armando Rodriquez

The Omaha Barnstormers(Mexico City) were looking to rebuild while the Madison Wolves were heading the opposite direction. When you're rebuilding you don't really have a place for an aging super star like 32 year old Gomez and the Barnstormers were looking to get as much as they could for him. It was a tough sell to the fans as Gomez was the face of the franchise at the time but he was also had the most trade value of anyone on the team. He achieved double digit wins with the Barnstormers in each of his first 10 years with the team. He won three ERA titles and was named the Nebraska winner three times. Madison knew they were taking a risk but they were in it for the now. Gomez had would be a free agent after the 2033 season and they had hopes of resigning him.

For Omaha it was a decent haul of young pitchers at the time. Vargas pitched just 29 innings over a few seasons before calling it a career. Pak never made it to the BBA and was out of baseball before he was 26 years old. Pham was as high as #31 on the prospect list and he carved himself a decent career in the BBA winning 113 games for Omaha including a 57-43 mark from '35~'39 when the Barnstormers(Aztecs) made the playoffs every season. He compiled a nice little 31.4 WAR over 1900 plus innings. Rodriguez is the heartbreak of the story as he rose as high as #35 on the prospect list but injuries allowed him to pitch just 193 innings at the BBA level.

WINNER:
I'm going to call this one a draw. Gomez didn't stay very long in Madison but he was good while he was there. He bolted for free agency and became a $20/year player with Rockville. The Wolves made the playoffs both years he put on their uniform including a first place finish in '32. Had Rodriguez not flamed out of the league due to injury this could have had a very different outcome. Pham was ok but never fully lived up to his prospect status. It worked out for both teams but Gomez got the last laugh as he would win another Landis with the Pikemen at the age of 37.

Getting Gomez was when I knew the rebuild had gotten real.

Gomez's short stop was due to me botching the time line and failing to get an extension offer in before he declared for free agency. I had to manage some other salaries and by the time I got that done, I submitted an offer and he declared for FA before accepting the offer.

Armando was due to flame out. He was an International Free Agent! haha
