In this series I'll be taking a look at some trades that have involved some of today's top players.
March 1, 2037
To New Orleans:
P Christian Garcia
P Jerry Pace
C Pedro Gomez
SS Damek Korbel
To Mexico City:
C Hsin Mei
New Orleans brought back quite a haul for a single player but Mei was coming off a 46 homers and a league leading .638 slugging percentage at the tender age of 25 years old. Mei was expected to push the Aztecs and help bring a Landis trophy to Mexico City. It didn't quite work out that way but Mei was a very productive player for many years. During his first year with Mexico City he won his only Zimmer and his last of three Pucketts and he was a four time All-Star with the Aztecs. The thing that Mexico City fans will never forget is how badly he played in the post season. With the Crawdads Mei had posted playoff numbers that rival his regular season career highs. In a similar amount of plate appearances he was a total non factor in post season play in a Mexico City uniform. In fact he posted a negative 1.1 WAR in post season play with the Aztecs.
New Orleans lost a catcher who appeared headed for stardom but they received four top tier prospects in return. Garcia and Pacy were both top 30 prospects while Gomez was in the top 50. Korbel was not as highly rated due to a perceived light bat but he posses a Zimmer caliber glove. So far Garcia and Pacy have combined for over 50 WAR(as well as 175 wins) for the Crawdads while Mei barely hit half that during his stay in Mexico City. Gomez and Korbel were each sent away in separate trades that returned an 80 potential relief pitcher and two 70 potential infielders. The Crawdads my eventually regret moving Gomez out as he seems to be hitting his stride at 28 years old posting 14.5 WAR in the three and a half seasons since.
WINNER:
Despite the fact that Pacy returned to Mexico City as a free agent(after 94 wins and 22+ WAR) the Crawdads run away with this trade. Garcia is a top 20 pitcher in the Brewster and he just turned 27. The three highly rated prospects and Garcia will make sure that New Orleans continues to win this trade well into the future. Did I mention that New Orleans actually won one more game than Mexico City during the seven seasons that Mei played for the Aztecs?
