Who Won The Trade? Phoenix sends Sosa/Purssell to Chicago for prospects
Like a lot of trades in the BBA this one comes down to money and it could have cost one team a chance at a Brewster championship. Gilbert Sosa and Mitchell Purssell are very good bullpen pieces and both were set to be free agents following the season. The Black Sox had only two choices, trade them or let them walk as free agents after the 2046 season. Phoenix, making their yearly push for a playoff spot, brought in the two high powered relievers with post season aspirations in mind.
The Trade: August 25, 2046
Phoenix received: RP Gilbert Sosa, RP Mitchell Purssell, & RP Antonio Soto
Chicago received: OF Azhar Muneer, RP Ricardo Negrete, SP Elmer Foley
Winner: Phoenix missed the playoffs despite the fact that Sosa and Purssell each pitched great for the Talons over the final month of the regular season. Sosa signed a modest four year, $28 million contract extension after the season making this a very good deal for Phoenix even is Purssell walks. Chicago finished the regular season with 98 wins, tied for second most in the entire BBA, but they were knocked out of the playoffs by a spirited Hawaii team in five games. I believe that playoff loss is a direct result of this trade. In the Black Sox three losses to Hawaii the bullpen gave up the deciding runs in games one and two in the eighth inning or later. To top that off the pen gave up four runs in the eighth inning of game five when Chicago was behind just 2-1. The bullpen lost that series for Chicago. It may have been a different story had the South Siders had Sosa and Purssell taking the hill. In conclusion Chicago lost this trade more than Phoenix won it although the Talons have a great closer locked up for the next four seasons and all it cost them were three might-miss prospects.

Didn't Chicago also retain the salaries? If I am remembering correctly that they did, it's a big win for Phoenix despite the rough end to the season. Though I like Foley a lot.

Anytime you get a guy named Elmer on your team it's gotta be considered a win

In a related story, I am considering trading for Maup Manshert for the exact same reason.
