Okay, So I Guess Ted Does Them In Podcasts Now. (4/14 Recap)
JAC-VAN
Vancouver receives:
DH Bertram Hahn
Jacksonville receives:
DH Dawit Taji
LF (DH) Alfredo Luna (R)
Other than his one career year in '32 buoyed by a HR/H rate that was 25% higher than his career average, Hahn has been somewhere between an okay and a good hitter from the DH position - seemingly good for a .25/.35/.5 ish slash line in any given year. That's all well and good while he is asking for 7.4M in arbitration, but heading into his age 32 season - and his first as a FA - the slugger was no doubt looking to cash in on that mythical 4.7 WAR season from 2 seasons back. And in this deal, it seems to me that JAC (rightly so) wasn't willing to pay an above average player like a superstar at a non-prime position. Enter Vancouver whom before the deal had 20M less on the payroll than the Hurricanes and, thus, better positioned to potentially give Hahn what he wants. On the other side of the equation, JAC didn't get too much back. Taji looks to be a AAA lifer while Luna is a low ceiling teenager whom they no doubt view as a lottery ticket that might be something with a few bumps here or there. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Hahn simply walks at the end of the year by proving too rich for the Mounties' blood, but considering that they didn't give anything of considerable value up it still wouldn't feel like a waste. In the end, this deal was a lottery ticket for a lottery ticket. If Hahn ends up surprising and accepting a 2-3 year deal in the 8-9M range then Vancouver hits a three of a kind on the flop. If Luna ends up bumping 1 point in both CON and POW then JAC hits his inside straight on the river. In all likelihood, the only thing that will probably come of the deal; however, is the Hurricanes willfully making themselves weaker in this year's postseason.
VAN-LV
To Vancouver:
2B Alfredo Bermudez
SP Alexandre Doyle
SP Jose Flores (AAA)
My never ending gratitude
1000 Recte Points*
To Las Vegas:
C Elroy Hinson
I have to admit, I'm a bit OOTP-rusty and forget what an 'O' option is. I *believe* it is a mutual opt-out (ie. both a team and player option) so that is what I am going to base this paragraph on; however, I reserve the right to be corrected and rescind the comment. With that out of the way, I'm surprised by this move from LV. If they felt the need so desperately for a DH, surely they could have found one that didn't have a .713 OPS last year and a .691 (pre-trade) this year. And *surely* they could have found one that wasn't on contract for 3 years and ~11M per average. I mean, Brian Whitten was already on the team and feels like a better option already. I then thought, 'well, maybe they are moving on from Brewer soon and needed Hinson's glove moving forward, but he's locked up for 5 more years after this at a contract that would be tough to move with the poison pills at the end in his mid 30s. So... idk. On the flip side, Burmudez is pretty stinky and overall a worse contract than Hinson, so maybe that was part of the appeal for LV, but again, surely there were better ways to cut off 2 bad contract years (the net savings between Hinson and Burmudez). In exchange for eating the turd sandwich that is Burmudez's contract and the ice cream sundae that is moving on from Hinson's, VAN also gets a nice SP prospect in Doyle that could easily find a home as a #3/4 SP at his peak, is only 24 years old and has 0 ML service time and another arm in Flores that I wouldn't personally give the time of day, but can absolutely see having a solid career at the back of VAN's rotation in their pitcher friendly park. All in all, it's tough not to see this as a resounding win for the Mounties.
OMA-LV
TO OMAHA:
3B Tyler Moore
RP Hiroyuki Rin
1B Jack Gulliver
SP Kyle Elston
LF Jerome Pichon
To LAS VEGAS:
SP Jon Chandler
RP Jose Reyes
RF Hector Gomez
On LV's side, Gomez is a non-entity, Reyes is a mediocre bullpen arm and Chandler is a mediocre SP that (I imagine) won't see his team option picked up at the end of the year. What gives... this was billed a "Blockbuster"! They can; however, celebrate Gulliver's deal coming off the books (though his production and contract both were almost 100% replaced by Hinson immediately after, so...). Rin might've been a bit pricey for a reliever as well, but all in all he's still very talented and his even being available feels like a knee jerk reaction to an (admittedly, really, really) bad year. All of this for the price of giving up two interesting youngsters in Moore and Pichon (neither of whom project to be amazing, but both are early in their team control years and could easily produce a 1-2 WAR per year apiece, imo). In the end, LV has a talented team regardless and I'm sure the 18M from Rin+Gulliver+letting Chandler walk after this year will help keep it together better down the road so I'm sure it works for them, but I like what OMA did for their situation as well.

Hm, I thought that was 'P'. Then 'T' for team and 'V' for vesting.bcslouck wrote:O is player opt-out.

An opt-out is essentially a Player option, but it's given in the middle of a contract, where as an option is at the end.

'P' is player option but 'O' is opt-out but it isn't mutual. It is a player one. Yeah, I know, they are basically the same thing. OOTP doesn't have a mutual option, which I find odd. That would probably be 'M'. I think the best bet for that is offer an opt out with a team option, since you can't do a player option and team option. I think Ron has a guy with a contract like that.

Ah, okay, thanks. Well, then, no way Hinson is opting out so the commentary stands - huzzah!RonCo wrote:An opt-out is essentially a Player option, but it's given in the middle of a contract, where as an option is at the end.

Worth noting also that Hinson signed the 2 year/17 million extension AFTER the trade.

How does that work with an extension being signed before a player hits his opt-out? I know it isn't like that in OOTP, but wouldn't you think that guarantees that year if it happened in MLB? I know that takes away the player choice, but if he is signing an extension, you'd think part of the deal is opting in to that year.usnspecialist wrote:Worth noting also that Hinson signed the 2 year/17 million extension AFTER the trade.

- JJ McQuade has an opt-out after this year, and I have a Team Option.bcslouck wrote:I think Ron has a guy with a contract like that.

The structure of these contracts is as close to a mutual option as the game gets, I suppose.

I like Hahn quite a bit, as his OBP is nice in front of guys like Rutledge and Noboru and even Gonzaga and Pagan. I wouldn't have done the deal if I didn't have a replacement who I liked nearly as much. And if Little Hurt doesn't pan out, moving Rutledge to DH, Arbizo to 1B, and Pagan back in at 2B makes our infield defense even better without losing much in Arbizo/Pagan over FTIII/Arbizo.
