Does Ted Still Do These? (4/21 - 4/23 Recap)

Post by agrudez » Tue Apr 24, 2018 3:49 pm

If so, my apologies for stealing your thunder, Ted. I figured if I am going to get back into the league it might be informative to look at some recent trade valutations.

Nashville-Omaha:
Nashville Sends:
Juan Nicto (BBA)

Omaha Sends:
Jim Tremblett (BBA) and
Ulbert Vleugel (AAA)

The subject of this trade was prefixed with (Another), meaning that there must likely be a long trade history between these two teams. Presumably, with this trade, Nashville finally delivered on some ephemeral "future considerations" from a trade past in the form of letting Omaha go bareback on this one. Vleugel is a bumper, true, but is already 23.5 and still a long way from ML viable potential so let's chalk him up as a non-entity for now. That means the trade boils down to Nicto for Tremblett. A promising 21 year old mid-rotation starter with a 99 MPH fastball and elite movement for a RH'd 3B with 5 contact. I think it's easy to sum this deal up, and luckily for me someone already did - inc. plagiarism:

Seattle-Louisville:
Seattle Receives:
Abe Colbert, JR
Marcos Diaz (AAA)

Louisville Receives:
Esteban Velazquez

Velazquez is a stud, no doubt, but he's also a 31 years old reliever on an expiring deal making ~10M (meaning he'll likely ask for at least that in an extension and more than likely an amount of years that makes suitors squirm at his age). So, I'm going to assume that this was merely a playoff rental for a team In Louisville that looks like they are going to make them. In exchange, the not playoff-bound Storm get two interesting players that look like relievers, but might be starters if you squint (and are brave enough to try). Colbert is actually a name I recognize - who could forget a knuckleballer - and has had success as a starter in the past before his CON ticked down from 5 to 4. It'll be interesting to see if SEA gives him another chance. Either way, I wouldn't think that he is what SEA did the deal for - that is clearly the 25 year old Diaz based on age alone. And while he certainly looks like he has the talent to succeed at this level, he's now on his 3rd season at full development and hasn't yet "put it together". Still, Velazquez was just going to walk at the end of the year, so for the Storm it was like squeezing water from a stone. I'd say that makes this deal a wash on both sides.

Long Beach-Yellow Springs
Yellow Springs receives
RP Brian Soper (A)

Long Beach receives
RP David Cantu (BBA)

An interesting case of two likely playoff-bound teams swapping players with one as a sale. Cantu is the buy as a 35 year old reliever on an expiring deal that has been a steady relief contributor having a great year thus far in 2034. On the other end, Soper looks to be thoroughly mediocre with a -split vs. LHB showing in his development that could see him ending as an 8/6/6 vs. that side. Needless to say, I'm not enamored with the later and, honestly, it seems like YS' bullpen might have a hard time absorbing Cantu's loss considering their 4th option is sporting a 4.66 ERA on the year at the moment. In the end, it looks like YS might've overthought this one considering their status in the standings, but ultimately the deal likely won't matter very much for either side.

no he doesnt, and it would be interesting to see some of these from the point of view of someone who has experience with the league, but has been out for awhile.

This, I'm actually planning on recording the trade one this weekend. But more opinions are always good.

Yeah I don't see Tremblett as a legit BBA player. He has the glove but he is going to hit .200 to .220. Don't understand this deal at all, but I've made some doozies in the past too.

At 24, Tremblett was a 3 WAR player until this year, so it's hard to justify calling him "not a legitimate BBA player." But, yes, his contact is a concern, and his future is murky. If he were on a minsal deal still I'd like him more as a rebuild helper.

Nicto has underwhelmed for me so far lol he better get his shit together. I think it's also worth mentioning that Tremblett did have a low batting average but my park severely lowers singles which kills batting average.

Omaha was already going to be very good before adding Clulow and Nicto.

You've brought up a lot of your young guys early, which I don't think has hurt their development so much as has had them eating up minsal time while their ratings come in, meaning their performance is lower than you'd like (they need waking up?). My hope as a division rival is that they get to their arby years just as they are waking up, so you have to pay them for performance. :)

A RHB with 5 CON would have a low batting average hitting in an open plain with only grazing cattle playing defense.

Tremblett can still have value, but, yes, he's going to have a low batting average pretty much no matter what.

Tremblett will fit fine in the role that he is being brought in for.

Seems like we only rate trades based on the value at that second. The plan will be vindicated!

Trading a guy that good with 4 years of TC including 1 more at league minimum is a bad move and I’ll say it’s a bad move if you’re vindicated. I would d Pm’d you had I known that’s all it took. I didn’t think I had the bullets.
