2062 – The End of a Streak (CCJ, The Atlantic, And History!)

The Charlotte Flyer’s exciting dash to the Atlantic division title did more than grab a bye in the all-important Monty Brewster championship series. It also broke Charm City’s amazing run of 9-straight division titles. That’s right. From 2052 until this year, the Jimmies took home the Atlantic Division title. Kudos to them. Long live the King, right?

That got me to wondering about historic streaks.

Was this the longest in Brewster history, you might ask?

The answer, of course, is No. The longest streak in league history (at least in modern, post 1995 time) still belongs to Chris Wilson in his days with the Madison Wolves, a stretch that ran 13 seasons from 1997-2009. In fact, Charm City’s run is technically not even the second longest such run in that it’s tied with New Orleans, who executed their run from 2011-2020.

Here’s the full list of runs that lasted at least five seasons.

It’s kind of fun to scan:

TeamConsecutive TitlesYears
Madison131997-2009
New Orleans92011-2020
Charm City92052-2061
Brooklyn81997-2006
Nashville8 (*)2056-Present
Cape Fear (Rockville)72035-2041
Brooklyn62008-2013
Omaha (Indianapolis)62021-2026
Bikini (Seattle)52011-2015
Jacksonville52034-2038
Las Vegas52046-2050

A few comments as they strike.
  • Nashville’s run of eight consecutive titles is still active. With the Heartland on the rise, and the club at a small inflection point, it will be interesting to see if they can make it to the top of the list. Personally, I’m betting not. [voice over: Ron has been wrong before]
  • Note that there were only four teams in each division until 2028, and the full 8-team divisions did not arrive until 2040. I’m sure that changes the competitive field in some fashion.
  • I was surprised to see Las Vegas on the list only once and with only 5 consecutive titles. If I’d been asked to guess beforehand, I’d have had them in the upper rung. The Hustlers have had two more runs of four seasons, though.
  • Two teams I’m surprised to see NOT on the list: Sacramento, and my own Yellow Springs Run. Neither club has managed to string five together. Sacramento has had two 4-season runs, Yellow Springs had one.
  • It may be worth noting that these two streaks (CCJ and NSH) being two of the top five put them in with three clubs who all completed their runs in 2020 or earlier.

So there’s that. The BBA has always been a highly competitive group, but there is some precedent for stints of domination. Can Nashville keep it going? WIll Charm City get back on the horse, or will Charlotte press on to join the list? Will Las Vegas hit the afterburners?

It’s going to be a lot of fun to see how the world evolves going forward.

I was surprised you weren't on there, too, Ron.

I think Nashville gets to 10 before it becomes harder for them.

Could well be. But I'll just say that the Bluebird's last four seasons have been:

126, 115, 110, 109

And for the first time since I've been back, if I dig into his team I can kind of see a path to them becoming beatable outside of randomness. It helps that more of the division has become competitive.

God, I hated those New Orleans teams. I took 4 in a row at the end of that streak then the division went back to being NO

Biggest shock to me was also Vegas. He's consistently good, but in my mind he won div titles, but sometimes all it takes is to make it to the dance, where everyone starts 0-0.

Being loyal to Barrera probably cost me the division this year. We’ll be back.
