How Do OOTP 25 Pitching Ratings Relate to OOTP 24 Ratings?

Post by Bob Breum » Fri Apr 19, 2024 2:11 am

We are all calibrated to interpret ratings in OOTP 24. Now we are confronted with dramatically changed ratings in OOTP 25. How can we make sense of these? Here is my attempt to relate the two. I've compiled tables that show individual pitching ratings and their percentile rank in their respective player universes.

You remember percentiles, right? A rating that has a percentile of 50 means that its value is higher than 50% of the pitchers in that universe. A rating with a percentile of 90 is higher than 90% of the pitchers in its universe.

If you look at the first chart that lists pitcher's potential Stuff ratings, you can see that in OOTP 24 a rating of 7 is at the 38.4 percentile, i.e, only 38.4 % of pitchers are rated worse than 7. But you can see that a rating of 7 in OOTP 25 is at the 86.4 percentile, thus in the top 14% of all pitchers. That's a huge change.

Looking at the Movement chart, a 6 rating in OOTP 24 is slightly above average at 54.2 percentile. Now, in OOTP 25, a movement of 6 is in the top 12% of all pitchers.

For Control, a 6 is again slightly above average at 52.3 percentile in OOTP 24. Now it's superior to over 2/3 of pitchers.

Here are two more charts:

The range of pitchers' BABIP has been compressed from 1-9 to 3-8, a decrease of 33%. A value of 6 used to suggest a fairly average rating at 41.7 percentile. Now it's in the top 15% of all pitchers.

For Home Run Rate, a 6 used to be slightly above average. Now it's in the top quartile.

This is why I thought we had moved to relative ratings.

This is your best work yet. Thanks for this.

Love this, provides a great high level snapshot. It'll be interesting to see which players are affected by the restructuring of the ratings.

Huge help.

Granted I always have to simplify this stuff even further. It appears a 6-6-6 pitcher or something like 7-6-6 is considered average-above average pitcher now? A rating higher/lower somewhere could affect that.
