2058 - Team Pitch/Batted Ball Data (Through May)

Post by RonCo » Wed Feb 28, 2024 8:08 pm

As I did with the GBC a few moments ago, here's something semi-new *meaning I've messed with some of it before but never really compiled stuff this way or felt confident enough of it to let it out into the wild too freely.

Anyway, I've been messing with my game log scripts, and have this very interesting data, sorted here by team. I also have it by individual pitcher, and will drop that in an excel/csv file as an attachment in case you're interested! (You'll have to sort yours out of the mix if you want to get personal)

But first...

Erik @breum working his magic with our Blazers pitching staff. We are #1 in groundball rate, and it's not particularly close. Conversely, we are last in flyball rate, as is our plan. We are also leading the league in minimizing HR/FB, which is clearly helped by the ridiculously deep fences in our home park; here again, it's not remotely close.

Not everyone can be Hector Silva. There are tradeoffs when selecting SPs. We have made an intentional choice for our staff to pitch to contact and relying on our defense to convert those (mostly) groundballs into outs. Hence we are last in swinging strikes, but a very respectable 6th in strike-throwing percentage. Here it is, hit it.

Concerning converting those groundballs into outs, here's a shout-out to our middle infield. Our 2B Miggy Martinez is leading the JL in ZR at 2B by a wide margin, and is 2nd in range. Our SS Qutuz Mahdi is leading the JL in range at SS, and is 2nd in ZR.

Erik hates it when I make these posts, but I just want to celebrate his work.

I was going to take some time and talk about that, anyway. So no harm no foul, right?

Montreal's swinging strike rate is very low, suggesting their pitchers don't miss bats particularly well. But their overall strike percentage (which includes contact) is very high, which also means their overall ball-rate is quite small--there are I think 4 teams better. But compare the Montreal 36.6% balls to Rockville's massive 39.1 ball-rate and that's quite the difference, now isn't it (he says, fighting valiantly to not take the "massive balls" and alpha male line too far)?

It's quite amazing to me that if you spend time looking at things, that most everything makes at least a little sense.

That said, I think the league's IFFB (popup)/FB rate is about 2x too high. Maybe 80%.

Kinsella making my pitchers better. Leading in strike percentage. Gotta love that.

Cool, too, that Nashville and Omaha are at the top of the Swinging Strike rate. Scanning the team's pitching staffs, yu can kind of guess that would be true.

Ron's Team Pitched / Batted Balls Viz

I created a quick and dirty Viz that you can sort by any of the columns you want based of individual players and broken down by teams / players.

I'm thinking about this in regard to the PAA conversation we're having in that thread...but one thing to note about all of my batted ball data is that GB/FB/LD numbers are based on all results, not just outs. This is relevant because the OOTP pitcher GB rating is applied to outs only--or at least "outs" as OOTP processes things. Hence, if StatsPlus shows Samuel Nebraska as a 65% GB pitcher (which it does), his true GB performance will be considerably different (which you can see here, it is...updated through the mid-July sim):

GB%FB%LD%PU/FBHR/FB
46.9%35.3%17.8%10.4%7.0%

Stating the obvious, I note that 46.9% GB rate is not close to his 65% rating.
