A Snapshot of injuries: Jun 2056

Post by RonCo » Tue Sep 19, 2023 7:25 pm

I’ve seen a few folks chatting about injuries over the past coupe weeks (poor Charm City, right?), and then saw Nashville’s Juan Rivera’s latest bump in the night. I’ve also been thinking about Sacramento’s horribly timed injuries of both Carlos Flores and Ruben Vazquez, and wondering how they stack up. So now that I’m finally back in town and almost settled, I set up my scripts and ran them again.

And since one of those scripts is about injuries, I dug into the data a bit.

What follows is – first – a tabulation of all our regular season injuries, sorted by division and total injuries. You’ll see who has lost how many players, and get some idea of how long they’ve been lost. That last bit, I normalized to days, using a mid-point for any spans that were involved (for example, 1-2 months was estimated as 45 days.

After that, just for kicks, I pulled out the lost-time injuries to pitchers and sorted that list by duration.

So, first I’ll post the overall table, and then make some comments…and then I’ll post the pitcher stuff.

Here’s the overall table.

BBA-Injuries-2056-Mid-Season.PNG

Rumination #1: Yes, Charm City is having a tough go of it. 21 total injuries, 9 lost time bumps and bruises, and a league leading 770 days lost (though some are still running and will eat up some days in the off season. Even the set-back they’ve hit has led the league at 90 days. So, yeah. Shitty year for them. And it’s not over.

Rumination #2: In that same Atlantic Division, Jacksonville has been cruising along with only 5 DTD events, and Atlantic City has had only four injuries, with two of them minor DTD events.

Rumination #3: Boise is running a close second to Charm City. Six losses for 661 days, including big injures to both SPs David Molina and Daniel Camacho. Yikes.

Rumination #4: Five teams are yet to have a lost-time injury. Sorry for the jinx, guys.

Rumination #5: Of course I looked at the Pacific division, where we see Sacramento’s loss of both Flores and Vazquez was not particularly egregious relative to some other numbers – except, of course, that’s 40% of the rotation, and the top end. Other teams of interest include Long Beach, who are second in the division for number of events, but have lost relatively little time on the field. Vancouver, though is drawing to an inside straight, it seems. One fewer injury than the Surfers, but where as Long Beach has only suffered 102 days of impact, the Mounties are sitting at 617. Holy moly.

Rumination #5A: I should note that since this chart does not include Sprint Training losses, it ignores another big injury for Vancouver, so their plight has been even worse than it looks.

Rumination #6: Despite the severity of the Rivera injury, Nashville’s season has been closer to Long Beach than Vancouver. Their Heartland competition has had a bit tougher roads, with TWC, CHI, MAD, and OMA all having lost twice as much (or more) time.

I’m sure there’s more to be gleaned here, but I’ll leave it to others to think through.

In the meantime, here is the full list of all pitcher lost-time injuries (including Spring Training this time).

Can add another pitcher to that list. Dorsey out for the season.

Yeah...those are just SP. I should probably do a bunch of different lists.

Not familiar enough with the players to have a good gauge, but am curious what the average age of these players are -- ie is it mostly older guys getting beat up all at once or is it a more random distribution?

Thanks for putting this together.

I love that injuries are back up. Challenges depth and makes you make decisions that you wouldn't normally make. Also great for league parity when the grim reaper takes out a couple of players on probable playoff teams and lets an over achieving tweener team have a legit shot at sneaking in.

I’ve been blessed with pretty good health over the years. Amazes me there are some teams this late into the season with no IL stints.

Yeah. It's a balance, of course. But I do like the issues injuries cause.

Not sure if I can get ages or not. I'll have to look at it more closely and see if I can get to the proper data somehow.

This is semi-close ... so I'd say it does look like older players are getting hurt more often.

There are more older players too so the above is not conclusive. That said, I expect that age is a major contributor.

Edit: never mind, it’s injuries *per player*.

Interesting to see -- helpful to see which demographics are most impacted by this most often.

I agree with Alan -- appreciate the challenge of managing through injuries, more realistic and rewards building depth. I find it can be easy to stockpile players who you could reasonably field, but seldom have reason to unless one of your top guys goes out. Emergent gameplay and all that. Not to say it isn't frustrating when it happens all at once, but to me that's part of the challenge of being a GM.

They are perl scripts... done with my own ugly coding. In happy to share them if you want to dig into them. My only request is that you share anything you learn from them.

I'm not sure if I don't feel so bad about our play of late or this is just depressing. I do have an older roster with a pretty good amount of young depth in my system. But I don't want to burn rookies in a lost season. FWIW you can add super-utility man Xinpeng Zhào who's also out for the season.
