BBA DEFENSE BY PLAYS MADE ABOVE AVERAGE: 9/14/2055

Post by RonCo » Sat Jul 29, 2023 10:20 pm

As with the pitching data I posted earlier today, this information is partial--coming from games after June 2 because that's all I got.

If someone wants to zip up game logs and box scores earlier than that, I'll add them in. But all I got is all I got.

Regardless, to refresh memories, this innformation comes from a game log script I wrote to crawl through the leage game logs. It compiles balls in play hit into each OOTP zone, and indicates whether it was turned into an out or not, then calculates league agerage rates for each zone so it can calculate wheter a team's defense was above or below what it might have been if the team's defense was league average everywhere.

Hence "Plays Above Average"

Bottom line: Charm City rules the roost with Omaha essentially a hair's breadth away. From June to September anyway. Both of those clubs are doing it with bgitime infield defense, whereas a Long Beach or a Des Moines kind of performance is just "good" pretty much everywhere. Teams like Rocky Mountain and San Fernando go biploar, but in oppposite directions.

Fun to look at, even if it's only partial data.

Good to see this one return.

Bad to see us fall out of the top 10.

Other than Marcelo Custello I don’t know why my infield defense is so good. I also thought my outfield defense is fine. Dunno. At least it aggregates to the black.

Thanks for putting this together, Ron.
