Thoughts on Brewster's Millions (some spoilers)

Post by neugey » Tue Apr 11, 2023 8:26 am

Last night, I finally got around to streaming Brewster's Millions (currently available on Amazon Prime+ or Apple TV with a buy/rental fee). I had originally seen the movie back in 1986 on VHS as a rental, but I am not one of those dorks with a keen memory for movie lines. So going into last night I barely remembered anything about it.

Because of my age, most of Pryor's other movies were either too old or off-limits due to R-ratings. And I couldn't stand Superman III. So oddly enough Brewster's is the primary work I associate Pryor with.

I showed my wife the trailer and she wasn't interested in watching with me. Fair enough - she is younger and Brewster's isn't one of those 80's movies like Back to The Future, Top Gun, Ghostbusters or The Goonies that has that breakthrough appeal.

So - some thoughts on the movie through the eyes of a BBA GM (some spoilers below):

- The pace of the movie is surprisingly brisk, especially for a movie of this era. Almost every scene involved Monty, so most of the supporting characters have limited screen time. Given the complexity of the movie's premise, they easily could have stretched the movie to 120+ minutes, but I'm glad they didn't. The manic nature of the movie plays to Pryor's strengths.

- Midway through the movie there is a reference to "27" players on the minor league Bulls' roster, and I'm guessing that translated right into our game as a rule!

- The Cubs and Yankees brands were used fairly prominently in the movie so MLB must have liked what they saw.

- Rick Moranis' cameo appearance was a hoot!

- My favorite minor character was Edward Roundfield, the steward overseeing the handling of the trust fund. He tries to remain neutral but he's rooting for Monty all along to keep the money out of the scummy bankers' hands.

- The "None of the Above" political campaign aged very well. Seriously, can it become a political party?

- The bit about the train rolling through the minor league outfield was hilarious.

- John Candy was great as always as the fun-loving trash-talking catcher Spike Nolan.

- The 80's was saturated with comedies. I wouldn't rank this on a level with Fletch or Ghostbusters or some others, but it was still quite enjoyable.

Thanks for the ***SPOILERS*** heads up on a movie that thirty-eight years old :)

JK - I never picked up on the 27 man roster. Good find. I've watched this movie too many times to count too!

Same here, except I can be insufferable with it, or so I’m told. One of the ways my autism shows: https://speakingofautismcom.wordpress.c ... nd-autism/
