Louisville, Kentucky -
Randy Weignand earned his recent contract extension to remain General Manager of the Des Moines Kernals. Just a season ago the second-year BBA executive lead his team to their first playoff appearance in over 40 years. Despite a three game sweep in the Geoghegan Round at the hands of the Louisville Sluggers, fans and players rejoiced when he was brought back on a long term extension. While this season hasn’t quite paced like last year’s, the Kernels are again in the thick of the Wild Card hunt.
The team arrived Wednesday in Kentucky on a warm July night. The Kernals had just lost a four game series to the Twin Cities River Monsters but were excited for the opportunity to rebound against Louisville. The Sluggers lead the season series 6-4 but the Kernals are hoping to bounce back against the team that ended their postseason dance last Fall.
And then it happened.
Before departing from the team’s hyper jet, also known as the “Butter Fly”, Weignand received notice he wouldn’t be staying in Kentucky long. In fact, he would be leaving almost immediately. Addressing the team on the runway, Weignand revealed to his team that he would be resigning immediately as GM of the team.
Shock. Disbelief.
Before a long career in baseball, Weignand served in the US Navy. It had been so long, many had forgot. Weignand, however, always knew there was a chance he’d return to service. While he leaves a void in the front office, his services are needed elsewhere.
His speech to the team was brief but thoughtful. Many players and coaches were seen crying, but Weignand wanted to emphasize that while the timing wasn’t the best for the season, he was happy for the call. A strange coincidence that in this same city a season ago, this GM would break a four decade post season slump, only to have his life changed abruptly nine months later.
The Kernals currently sit 13 games back in the Heartland and 5 games back in the Wild Card. At 51-54 the team finds themselves at a crossroads of sorts.
Weignard is said to be stationed in Hawaii and says if he gets the chance, he will try his best to see his former team play when visiting the Tropics.
