Play of the game, broadcast transcript. Fredo Torres, play-by-play announcer, with commentary by Bob Burke.

[start]

Fredo: Cougars are in a tough spot here in the eighth with men on first and second. They're going to bring in Stan Smit to face Calgary catcher Juan Noriega and try to protect a one-run lead. Noriega hitless in three plate appearances so far tonight. Smit pitching very well so far this year, with a 2.37 ERA. These two have never faced each other at the big league level.

Bob: Smit has a fastball that tops out around 97 miles per hour, a curveball that falls away from right handed batters, and a pretty cantankerous disposition. Never been ejected from a game, though.

Fredo: Smit looks in. And his first pitch to Noriega is swung on. Hit sharply down the third base line and bouncing into the outfield. Battle will score as the ball rattles around in the corner. Madden will stop at third as Noriega pulls into second with a stand up double.

Bob: The runners had to freeze for a moment as it looked like Gutiérrez might get to that one, otherwise Madden likely would have crossed the plate as well.

Fredo: You can't really rule it out with Gutiérrez, a pretty rangy fielder there over at third base. Smit going to try and collect himself here. Runners on second and third and just one out so far in the inning. That brings up Don Keagle who's going to pinch hit for the shortstop, Abbad bin Rashad. Keagle, a center fielder more known for his work with the glove, is looking for his first big league hit of his career. He's a switch hitter, and will be batting left-handed against the right-hander, Smit.

Bob: This would be a good time to get that hit.

Fredo: First pitch from Smit is inside and called a ball. Smit giving the home plate umpire a bit of a glare as he snatches at the ball coming in from behind the plate.

Bob: Smit needs to think about the next pitch and forget the last one. Just off the black according to the pitch tracker.

Fredo: The 1-0 pitch from Smit is down and in for ball two. A check swing from Keagle and there's an appeal to the first base umpire. He did not go. Smit clearly not happy how this at-bat is going.

Bob: Smit needs to be a goldfish. Just take it one pitch at a time.

Fredo: The 2-0 pitch is a fastball in the zone. Keagle swings and doesn't get much of it, a blooper into shallow left. Gutiérrez is after it … diving … but can't hold onto it and it falls for a base hit. Both runners will score as Gutiérrez scrambles for the ball. Keagle is trying for two and the throw from Gutiérrez is not in time. A two RBI double for Keagle, who puts his team on top. Time is called and the Cougars roll the ball over to the visiting dugout. A souvenir for Keagle, his first big league hit.

Bob: You'll take it any way you can get it.

[end]

The Pioneers would allow no runs the rest of the way, and would win this game 6-4.
