Game Recap

In the second game of this interdivisional match-up, New Orleans would slip past the hometown Spuds 6-5 thanks largely to a pair of two-run homers: the first by first baseman Raúl Fernández in the fifth inning, and the second by shortstop Sid Turcotte in the sixth. This would avenge, at least in part, Sunday's opening game 10-1, seven home run beat-down. The win would improve New Orleans's record to 23-24, while Boise would fall to 23-25.

Two-time all-star second baseman José Sánchez, who went 3 for 4 and drove in two, would collect player of the game honors. He would leave the game early due to a knee injury.

The unlikely hero, Turcotte, is an interesting story. The twenty-six year-old North Dakota native has never started more than 60 games for New Orleans in a season, the only BBA club he's been a part of. His highest season WAR total to date is 0.3, which he earned in 2046. He has an excellent reputation as a defender, but, as one might imagine, his offensive production has been lacking. On a team that already has up-and-comer Felipe Reyna on the roster, and is willing to play Sánchez (and until this year, Shalom van Buuren) at short, Turcotte's opportunities to start have been few. Turcotte's slash line last year was .206/.276/.235. Poor production, even for a shortstop, but so far in '49, he's slashing .278/.330/.367, which may just lead to more playing time. Worth keeping an eye on as the season progresses.

New Orleans starter Gilberto Nevárez (5.2 IP, 5 K, 2 BB, 7 H, 2 HR, 3 ER) was credited with the win. Boise starter Cornelio Lozano (4.2 IP, 6 K, 2 BB, 5 H, 3 ER) would collect the loss.

With the opening two games of this series split between the two clubs, either team could still come out on top. The good news for both of these teams is that there are currently just four clubs in the Johnson League with a winning record (Jacksonville, Charlotte, Las Vegas, and Calgary) so just being near .500 is enough to keep late May post-season hopes alive.
