So, What's an average player look like nowadays?

Post by niles08 » Tue Jun 15, 2021 2:28 pm

Since our change “back” from “relative ratings” a few seasons ago(or whenever it occurred), I have struggled to know what is “average” as before our changeover, we all knew that typically 5 was actually “league average”.

The easiest way to figure it out seems to be to pull all the data, and try to dissect it a bit, which I have done below and your more than welcome to dig into.

I have actually broken out the data by position, however please know ahead of time that players that are not playing in the “in game position” are not listed or taken into effect for the averages. For instance, if there is a RF who has been playing 1B, his credit is given as a RF, not as a 1B. All players listed have a minimum of 85 plate appearances (I tried to find as many starters as possible, and this seemed like a decent spot).

I have also added RC/27, wRC+, and WAR to each position to evaluate averages for those. For the infield, there are infield fielding ratings, and the outfield has outfield fielding ratings listed as well.

A few things I have noticed according to the reporting at each position are below.

Catcher: Catcher is an interesting place to start. Among those on the list, the average overall rating is 56.36, while the average batting rating line is just 7/7/6/5/6, with catchers hitting lefties quite a bit better than right-handed pitching. The average catcher ability is 8, while the average arm is 7. wRC+ on average from the catcher position is 79.48 with 4.03 RC/27 on average.

First Base: First base sits at 59.26 overall on average with a batting line of 8/8/8/5/7, which is a bit less than I expected. First baseman seem to be able to hit righties better than lefties, with a full “1” between the R/L split on both contact and power. 5.41 RC/27 with a wRC+ of 110.

Second Base: At second base, the average overall is right about where the average catcher sits with a 56.45 overall. The batting line is 7/7/5/5/7, which is similar to a catcher. RC/27 of 4.71 currently and a wRC+ of 97.42 shows much better production from 2B offensively than at catcher.

Third Base: Third base is right around average at 102.7 for a wRC+ with the average overall being 58.48, and the average batting line being 8/8/6/5/7. The average 3rd baseman has an error rating of 7.58, and an arm rating of 9.92. They are generating 4.87 RC/27 on the season.

Shortstop: This is what I really wanted to look hard at as I constantly feel I am looking for a shortstop. Currently, the league average shortstop is a 54.86 overall. The batting ratings average for the shortstop position is 6/6/4/5/6 which as expected is lower than other positions. Fielding ratings are 8.80/10.06/9.24/10.17 for R/E/A/DP. The range being at 8.80 seems a bit lower than I expected it to be. The average shortstop, wRC+ follows their ratings with just a 69.09. WAR early on this season is just an average of 0.30 with just 3.47 RC/27.

Outfield: I tossed all 3 outfield positions into 1 which may be a bit unfair, but was the simplest way since quite a few outfielders find themselves playing across the outfield at various times. The average BBA overall rating is 57.95 with batting ratings of 8/8/7/5/7. Fielding is typically 6/8/8(keeping in mind, this is all outfielders). Just center field have an 8.83 range on average and on average a CF has a 9.1 rating at all 3 fielding ratings. The wRC+ for outfielders is 113.07 with an average of 0.70 WAR. That number jumps to 130 looking just at right fielders. RC/27 for all outfielders is on average 5.53, but just looking at right fielders, that number jumps up to 6.47.

Anyhow, feel free to poke around, I’ve had a good time comparing my players to what the “league average” seems to be.

Very good stuff…. It’s a shot of reality reminding me not to obsess over the draft after the first few rounds.

A little surprised how high the averages are. Nashville needs some star power in there.

Nice work. The one issue--or point, I guess--is that one of the problems with relative ratings is that folks thought "50" was meant to be average, but in reality it was higher.

Thanks for this.

I know that, since joining, I've had to radically reframe how I look at player ratings. Good to look at some actual data.
