Your Random BBA Graph of the week - 2047.06

In this weeks installment, I'd like to thank @Jwalk100 for giving me the ideas for this. Using FanGraphs article on using Shutdown / Meltdown instead of saves as a better indicator of a reliever. For those of you to lazy to click the link in fear of a Rick-Roll.

"...how do we determine if a relief pitcher helped or hurt his team? Using Win Probability Added (WPA), it’s very easy to tell exactly how much a specific player contributed to their team on a game-by-game basis. If a player increased his team’s win probability by 6% (0.06 WPA), then they get a Shutdown. If a player made his team 6% more likely to lose (-0.06), they get a Meltdown. These cutoff points put Shutdowns and Meltdowns on a similar scale as Saves and Holds, meaning that 40 shutdowns is roughly as impressive as 40 saves. While the WPA aspect can take a bit to explain to saber newbies, having Shutdowns and Meltdowns on the same scale as Saves makes it much easier for new people to accept and understand. Dominant closers or set-up men will typically have 35 to 40+ shutdowns and a handful of meltdowns. Meanwhile, meltdowns are more common than blown saves, and they can happen to both closers and non-closers alike. The worst relievers will rack up around 10 to 15 meltdowns in a season."

OOTP has been kind enough to included this statistic since our 2032 season on a players stat pages. Yes, Chicago as you would expect has been strong in the bullpen the last 4 years, (not dropping below 5th place). But just as consistent over that same period has been @shoeless.db 'Popes, and @RonCo formidable YS9. So much so in his 2044 epic run the YS9 bullpen added a whopping 16.33 wins. Charlottes, rise in the standing last season, can in-part be contributed to their bullpen turnaround from 1.23 WPA in 2045 to 8.92 in 2046. That's almost a 8 game swing, thanks to the bullpen. Go check out and see how your team faired.

Here is the Best Bullpen in the BBA

Enjoy
