When you think of top catchers in the Brewster, my guess is that Valencia’s Luis Fernandez does not leap to mind. He debuted this year, and in 238 plate appearances he registered a not-so-amazing .226/.262/.323, good for -.02 WAR as he shuttled between the Stars and AAA Mars. Defensively? Well? He threw out 20% of the runners who took off against him and with 3 errors and 3 passed balls in 63 games, one suggests that there might be better options coming along sometime.
That said, it’s fun to not Fernandez is the answer to a weird little trivia question this year.
That question?
Name the only catcher in the league to throw out two base stealers in the same at bat?
That’s right.
In digging through the game log script I came across this little gem that happened on June 26 as Valencia was hosting the Sacramento Crusaders. With the score tied 3 to 3, and the Crusaders hitting in the top of the 9th inning, Quant Kouros drilled a base hit with one out. Henri Charriere followed with a line drive to right field that was hit too sharply for Kouros to advance more than one base. So there we have it. One out, Kouros on second, Charriere at first.
The Stars brought Jorge Garcia in to pitch, and Sacramento followed by pinch-hitting Alejandro Ortiz.
Kouros took off for third on the first pitch, and Fernandez gunned him out.
Ortiz then swung and missed twice to make the count 1-2. Charriere then took off for second, and Fernandez gunned him down, essentially ending Ortiz’s at bat.
To make it even more sweet for Valencia, a few minutes later, Jose Carlos Coronado used a soft-hit tapper to drive in the winning run.
So, yeah, that’s baseball. Keep watching and it rewards you with something you’ve never seen before.

Re: The Unknown Answer to a Fun Trivia Question
Two of the best base stealers in the BBA gunned down by a a 4-arm catcher. Thanks, OOTP.
Garcia also has a 3-hold.
Dumb.

Charriere must have tripped on his way to second.
