Defensive Runs Saved
Defensive Runs Saved is a stat that captures a player’s defensive value by indicating how many runs he has saved or hurt his team in the field. This is compared to the average player at that position.
Method-
First we need the defensive stats for each player. The stats we need are BIZ, which is Ball in Zone. Each batted ball is given a grade. The grades are Routine, Likely, Even, Unlikely, Remote and Impossible. The game gives us the percentage the player makes in each zone, the total chances and total plays made.
Once we have the stats we then need to get the average. I started with CF and used the filter to find all players that have played CF this season and verified that those stats are CF stats. SS Robert Menzies has played CF we need those stats to find average.
All the BIZ are tallied and averaged. Now that we have those numbers the formula can be built.
Let’s say the average CF makes a play in a routine zone 90% of time. So if a player makes a catch in a routine zone he is credited with .10 points. If he misses that catch, he is penalized .90 points. After all BIZ have been calculated the scores are all added together to show a players DRS.
Like all stats, the bigger the sample size the better.
Top CF DRS (Up to date):
Bottom 10 in DRS (Up to date):
I will add other positions as I complete them and I will try to keep these up to date.

Re: Defensive Runs Saved
Interesting. I'm always trying to figure out what ZR is in OOTP, too. I'm very close to being able to do PAA for individual players, too. So I'd really love to overlay those kinds of data with this.

Re: Defensive Runs Saved
Left field is often looked at a position with players that have the ability to hit with power. Their defense is not as good or sought after as a center fielder. That being said, the BBA has 54 player that have a positive DRS.
A non surprise is Juan Rivera as the top LF in DRS. Rivera is rated 10 at LF with 8 Range, 9 Error and an 8 Arm.
A surprise (at least for me, Im an idiot, just ask @shoeless.db) is Bronx Cortez. Cortez is rated 9 at LF with a 7 Range, 10 Error and a 7 Arm.
The attachment above shows that Cortez doesn't get to as many balls as Rivera but he makes a catch at a higher %. Could be small sample size or luck but it bears watching.
Listed are the Top 10 LF:

Re: Defensive Runs Saved
Next up is RF.
Right field has good offensive players that also bring their glove. At the top is Antonio Cordero (an ok bat) and Dennis French (good bat). Cordero is just ahead of French in DRS 11.97 to 11.24 which equates to a win a piece with their gloves.
On the other end is Norihisa Yokohama. Yokohama has a DRS of -11.85, costing his team a win so far this season. The only glove he should wear is a batting glove and DH for the rest of his career.

Re: Defensive Runs Saved
This series is cool. I figured Huerta would be on the opposite side that I want him on. He’s not the worst though and that’s the only important thing to me.

Shortstops
Now we get down to one of the most important positions on the field. These are the guys we want to cover everything. From chasing down pop flies in shallow left, foul balls all the way to the stands and balls hit behind the second base bag. These guys need range and an arm.
SS Top 10:
This group is led far away by Phoenix SS Dashiell Faireborn. Faireborn has that eye popping 30+runs saved that equates to about 3 wins. With such a big positive it comes with a big negative. The only pop this guy has is his drink. At one time, Dashiell was slashed .234/.351/.251 over 8 seasons in Mexico City but now he is known as glove man.
SS Bottom 10
Montreal SS Angel Zalapa makes this list. Zalapa makes the even plays but bumbles too many routine plays.

Re: Defensive Runs Saved
2B
The cornerstone is an often overlooked position full of weak armed slap hitters with some speed. This group of second basemen is led by a kid that had exploded on the scene after struggling early. Sacramento 2B Henri 'Papillion' Charriere has hit below .200 since breaking in as a 20 year old with the Mad Popes in 2043. His offense has improved but his defense has always been gold glove caliber.

Catchers use something different. I will be working on that in the future. I am also working on Pitching Runs Saved. It has 44 formulas so it will take me some time.

Re: Defensive Runs Saved
Hopefully moving Mike England to 2B will improve his rating on his SS showing (not that he can get any worse lol). Fernando Figueroa has really helped our outfield defense and he’s slowly improving his bat lol, up from the .150 range to the .200 range recently

Third base is traditionally looked at as a position that is manned by a player that has power and a serviceable glove. This list is a mixed bag in the top 10. We have good hitters and some light hitting players but they all have good gloves.
