The Commanders Palace - New New Orleans Stadium

Post by JimBob2232 » Sun Jun 07, 2020 8:49 am

As has been rumored for quite some time - Today the New Orleans Crawdads announced the construction of "The Commanders Palace" in downtown New Orleans. The $68M stadium will offer an upscale ballpark experience while honoring the legacy of the previous teams and players as well as the history of New Orleans.

The stadium is intended to be nearly identical to the existing Karen Huckfeldt Memorial Stadium - with some changes to reduce maintenance. 402 feet to center, 330 feet down the lines - identical to the existing stadium. Grass turf will be replaced with astroturf. Capacity will remain at 55,000 guests which was often sold out in the old stadium. A retractable roof will remain - although with a slightly different design - to more robustly hold up in the harsh new orlean weather pattern.

The stadium has worked well for us. GM Jim Roberts said. Lots of memories in that place. Hate to see it go - but its starting to get too much of a maintenance burden. We have the opportunity to put a top notch club on the field every year - and now we have the opportunity to put a state of the art facility to go with it.

The new stadium will be called "The Commanders Palace" after the legendary New Orleans Restaurant in the Garden District. The stadium will have the famous blue and white stripes on the outside, and feature a sit-down restaurant overlooking center field that will feature the same level of service and quality of food that can be expected from such a prestigious culinary experience. The restaurant will be open to the public 365 days a year - except on game days where it will only serve one seating.

Other food vendors who have signed up include Cafe Du Monde, Port Orleans Brewery and Napolean House. With these options there will be no shortage of quality food at the ballpark. So rest easy friends. You can get your hot mufaletta, beignets, Pralines, Red Beans and Rice, and even Gumbo inside the park. There is no doubt that it will be on every baseball foodies list of top places to go (Much better than Jacksonville! ). And to top it all off - mobile ordering will be available with a state of the art Wi-Fi system to allow patrons to order from their seat and have food and beverages delivered right to their seat.

Inside there will be a wall of fame that will prominently display legendary players, coaches and owners in the franchise history. These players are also honored in the existing stadium - but will be transferred over in tact. There will be a wall that will honor the winning teams of each of the 7 landis victories - with room for many many more. There will be a monument for each winning team memorializing each player who played a game that year for the team. Players will be sorted in order of their WAR that season. The plaques will be blue and white - to align with the Commanders Palace color scheme.

Also new for the stadium - the famous Hurricanes will be served up until the 7th inning - limited to one per guest. Ownership will keep an eye on this to make sure it doesnt get out of control. We want our fans to have a good time - but we dont want this to turn into burboun street or the Atlantic City Boardwalk. We are marketing this as an upscale ballpark experience. You dont name a place the "Commanders Palace" then let drunkards run amuck like its bourbon street.

With that said, there will also be a Mardi Gras themed bar that will open following the last pitch. This will give Montreal fans something do do instead of watching their teams lose - and will allow other guests to stay at the park a bit longer and celebrate the wins over Charlotte (or drown their sorrows).

Free shuttles from the ballpark to the famous new orleans street car system will be offered from two hours before the game until 1 hour after the game. Free ride sharing services will be offered within 10 miles of the stadium for any non-Brooklyn fan who chooses to stay and partake at the Mardi Gras pub.

Also important, facilities and amenities will be improved upon. Increased restrooms, air conditioned family rooms for young families, and even a day care option for families with young kids who would like some quality time at the ballpark - but dont want to subject their children to watching Rockville play baseball. You will even be able to tailgate before the games - something that might be completely foreign to visiting fans from Charm City.

One last note that GM Jim Roberts would like some help with. The previous stadium was intended to be a memorial to Karen Huckfeldt, sadly a poll of visitors in 2042 indicated not a single fan knew hew Karen Huckfeldt was. Including GM Jim Roberts. I've tried finding a family member. But no luck. Would love it if someone could tell me who she was and her role in the BBA so we can continue to memorialize her appropriately in the new stadium design. For now a single plaque will be placed at the entrance reminding folks of the previous namesake.

To fund this effort, GM Jim Roberts estimates a total cost as follows:
$50,000,000 Base Cost (+100PP)
$11,000,000 Upgrade to 55,000 seats
$5,000,000 Retractable Roof
$2,500,000 Artificial Turf

For a total of $68M plus 100PP.

New Orleans has been saving up in the bonus funds the last few seasons and currently has 32,850,000 in bonus funds - enough for a sizeable down payment. The remaining $35.15M will be paid for using an installment plan - which GM Jim Roberts hopes to pay off in the coming few seasons.

ooo interesting setup. Unfortunately with regards to the last part you have to pay it out over the full 10 years, even if you have the money ahead of time.

Great writeup!

The real Commander's Palace, by the way, is one of the country's best restaurants. Was lucky enough to eat a Thanksgiving dinner there one year, and it was a truly memorable experience.

It is my favorite restaurant in the entire world. Bar none. The service is absolutely amazing. I ate there twice (about 5 years apart) and when I showed up the second time they knew it was my second visit, welcomed us back and asked me if I wanted to sit where I did last time. The food is simply amazing - only to be outdone by their service.

And frankly - yes it’s pricy - but I live in dc and it’s on par with what I would normally pay for a nice dinner out here.

Pricy, yes, but I thought it was worth every penny. We sat in a dining room where the back wall was mostly window and looked out on a brightly-lit (it was evening) tropical garden … every part of the meal (from the food to the service to the surroundings) was amazing.

Never been at commanders palace but ironically my favorite restaurant is actually in DC (well national harbor technically). Voltaggio Brothers at the MGM Casino is pricey, but mind blowing.

My daughter lives in Silver Spring and says she has eaten there and the portions are huge. She likes Al Volo in Adams Morgan, another Italian place.

Shots fired at ATC! Also - can we get a Mothers representation in the stadium? Every time I go to NO, its a must stop...
