Makeover Monday #3 - Omaha Hawks
Posted: Sun May 03, 2020 9:26 am
Welcome to week 3 of Makeover Mondays. I know its only Sunday morning, but I might be out-of-pocket later tonight so I'd figure I'd post now. For makeover #3, is another supreme Heartland team, the Omaha Hawks. This franchise has moved around more than Spinal Tap has had drummers. Originally started in Lexington, then moved to Austin, then to Marquette, over to Indy, and finally landing in Omaha back in 2033. Phew!
In 70 years, they've had 9 GMs, made 26 playoff appearances, been to three Landis games, only to come away with zero titles. You know what else is a zero? Their outfit. (Just kidding Niles, but I needed a transition).

Let’s take a look at the old one.
At first glance this logo seems to be strongly influenced by the 1980's Atlanta Hawks of the now defunct NBA. A red circle with a Hawk's profile cutting into one side. So sad what happened to that league when they decided to change the game to just be H-O-R-S-E back in the 2020's due to the pandemic. They never should have listened to Cuban.
This is another logo that's simple, iconic, one color, but is from an era a long time ago. I like the use of the logo, the circle plays into the franchises city of Omaha, but since this is Makeover Mondays, they need a new look. My feature, my rules.

For those of you playing along at home, I'll Explain the rules again...
The Makeover had to meet these 3 criteria.
- First, incorporate something into the new logo that has a baseball theme.
- Second, use the teams existing color / uniform palette w/in the new look when at all possible.
- Third, try to maintain a connection to the team’s history.
My design style is pretty simple. If the logo looks good in black and white, you have a good logo. Second, I’m a big believer in less is more when it comes to colors for unis and logos. Some of my favorite sports logos have this look. (I’ll leave my two fav sports teams off) - <wink>. If you look at the Raiders, Packers, and Colts in the NFL, each has two colors or 3 colors in their primary designs. The Yankees, Dodgers, and yes, even the Red Menace themselves, the St. Louis Cardinals. All have what I consider a classic logos / color scheme. I could go on, but just note, I am a card-carrying member of Uni-Watch

Any-who, with-out further ado… your 2042 Makeover Monday Omaha Hawks

As you can see in the new Makeover Monday of the Hawks logo, I stayed with their primary colors of Red, Black and White form their in-game palette. I added a touch of yellow for the updated Hawks beak and stars. The circular design sits on top of a baseball, which has the new Hawk profile, as he streaks across the skyline of Omaha on his way to beat up on Pacific division foes!
The teams font has been updated, to include a new Hawk "H" which you will see below that it and the Hawk are one. Toss in some stars (who doesn't like stars), and your done.
Now on to their Hats & Uniforms
Hats: -- Whoa! Oh-boy what a hot mess here.
Old:
Too much going on, black hat, red & black brim, some red stripes, and large white Omaha text across the front. This same hat was used for home and away. A total redesign was needed.

New:
I toned their look down some. Staying with the color scheme, they now have a tri-colored hat, white front with red sides, and a red brim. Featured on the hat is their new "Hawk H" logo.

Home Uni: - The Hawks have the same home/road uniform in the game, so I fixed that and made one for each.
Old:
Looking at the current one, a LOT of red going on here. The current uniform looks a lot like a softball teams, with the use of different color sleeves, large white piping, and the swoosh under the Omaha wording. We need to tone this down some. Again my feature my rules

New:
Less is more here. I put the home jersey back to a more soft white, with thin black piping. The teams name is now across their home jersey utilizing the updated font and "Hawk" H. The sleeve patch is now the teams primary logo from above.

Road Uni:
I have updated the Hawks road-unis to be a solid grey color with the word Omaha in team font spelled out across the chest, utilizing the Hawk H Thin red piping along the sleeves and jersey buttons to add a little detail, again the teams new logo on the sleeve.

Hats will be available soon in the BBA Shop
Enjoy!
Up next HAWAII!
