Tight 2041 JL Nebraska Race

Tight 2041 JL Nebraska Race

The Johnson League is going to have a tough time picking it’s Nebraska winner this year. There is a guy with a shot to become only the 2nd player in league history to win 30 games and he might not be the favorite. The leader in both ERA and WHIP was totally left out of a recent Slack discussion of who should win. There are 3 pitchers from 1 team in the hunt. Like I said it is going to be a close one. So here is a break down of the top 10 candidates for the Nebraska, in no particular order, and I know I left some good guys off the list probably because of high ERA or another bad stat that they had compared to the rest.

The Rockville 3
Dan Cannon, Rockville - 14 wins (7th), 3.61 ERA (3rd), 1.13 WHIP (2nd), 193 K (2nd), 4.7 K/BB (3rd), .242 (5th)
Arthur Dempster, Rockville - 17 wins (4th), 3.96 ERA (5th), 1.21 WHIP (6th), 239 K (1st), 9.8 K/9 (2nd), .227 AVG (2nd)
Dave Martin, Rockville - 18 wins (3nd), 1.23 WHIP (8th), 153 K (8th), 5.3 K/BB (2nd), 1.3 BB9) (1st)

Taker your pick, I’m not even sure who it the best guy on the team! Dempster and Cannon have 5 Nebraska’s between the two of them already. Of the fireballers it is a toss up. Cannon has the better ERA and WHIP, Dempster the K’s and wins. Then you have Martin, with more wins than the other two and the best control in the league. With a few starts left for each of these, maybe one will emerge from the pack. Any of them could win the Nebraska.

The Calgary 2 1/2 (or the Calgary 2 and the 1 they traded to Brooklyn)
Edwin Gilliam, Calgary - 13 wins (8th), 3.29 ERA (1st), 1.11 WHIP (1st), 3.5 K/BB (7th), 1.8 BB/9 (5th), .245 AVG (6th)
Jefferson Pierce, Calgary - 13 wins (8th), 1.23 WHIP (7th), 186 K (3rd), 10.4 K/9 (1st), ,231 AVG (3rd)
Bobby Lynch, Brooklyn - 15 wins (5th), 4.02 ERA (8th), 1.19 WHIP (4th), 4,2 K/BB (4th), 1.4 BB/9 (2nd)

Gilliam is the quiet one that hasn’t gotten much attention despite leading the league in both ERA and WHIP. He has the best chance at the Nebraska of this group and it would be a surprise for him to not finish in the top five. Pierce is throwing fire, but probably not enough across the board to finish in the top 5 this year, but he will contend for years to come. Calgary thought he was over the hill, but Lynch has reemerged in Edmonton as a real threat to get votes. Probably not in the top 5 but don’t count him out. He is running out of time to get his Nebraska.

The Las Vegas Bullpen Duo
Edris Mtume, Las Vegas - 26 wins (1st), 6.9 K/9, .257 AVG
Shawn Huber, Las Vegas - 9 wins, 178 K (5th), 21 Holds (1st), 12.1 K/9, 1.5 BB/9, 8.1 K/BB, .210 AVG

When is the last time we had 2 legit relievers in the race. Huber is the Grady of the year. If he qualified he would be leading the league in several categories. Worst thing for him is that he may not even get the most votes on his team. Probably no Nebraska or Egan, but will get a ton of votes in each. How is Mtume not the runaway winner in the voting. I know the other stats aren’t great, but 26 wins and he is bound to get more!! At 27 wins he is tied for 5th in league history. At 28 he is tied for 2nd with Steve Nebraska! At 29 he has more wins than Nebraska ever had, how do you not give him the Nebraska! At 30 he ties the all time league leader Jessie Wright as the only other pitcher to win 30.

The Aztec Ace
Pedro Rocha, Mexico - 13 wins (8th), 3.52 ERA (2nd), 1.19 WHIP (3rd), 4.2 K/BB (5th), 1.7 BB/9 (3rd)

A guy that doesn’t get much attention, but he is having a heck of a year. Close to Gilliam in ERA and WHIP, the guy just gets better with age.

The Forgotten Crawdad
Jerry Pacy, New Orleans - 15 wins (5th), 3.63 ERA (3rd), 1.19 WHIP (5th), .227 AVG (1st)

To show you how good the pitchers are this year, Pacy didn’t even make the All Star team. Stingy with the hits and only in his 3rd season. Going to be a force for years.

Forget about Pacy not making the ASG...im completly perplex how he made it (almost) through the season without getting injured.
