Your Random BBA Graph of the week #7!

Post by CTBrewCrew » Thu Nov 21, 2019 9:46 pm

Since I will be away for this upcoming weekend and next week is a shortened holiday week, I wanted to get this next BBA Random Graph of the week out a bit early. Just like the amount of food we consume on Thanksgiving, this ones a big and those of you with dual monitors will appreciated the extra real-estate to view it.

I wanted to visualize the amount of Wins each franchise has in the BBA going back to 1973, and see how they ranked vs other teams compared year over year.

The Viz is broken down by team and its wins for the year. Each team is then ranked according to the # of wins each season (i.e. if you are ranked #1, you had the most wins in that season, and #30 the least).

Since there is a lot going on when you first look at it, to work with this Viz you can either use the Selection Team Highlighter to focus on a teams path over the years in the main area, or you can also just click on a team in the main area to see that as well.

There is an independent filter just below the title to see how that franchise "Average" ranked over the 66 years.

Looking at it initially - in the 66 years of the BBA it shows that its very difficult to follow success with success over a sustained period of time.
Only two teams stand out to me that have accomplished this feat over a long duration (Madison & Las Vegas).

Over a 11 year span (1998 - 2009) Madison finished ranked 1st or 2nd 8x, 3rd or 4th 2x and only ONCE in this 11 year span dropped to 5th. Pretty impressive.

Looking at Vegas, over a 14 year span (2020 - 2033) they finished ranked 1st or 2nd 8x as well, 3rd or 4th 3x but also dropped to either 6th or 7th 3x times. Still a good feat, and part of the reason this team is the all-time leader in BBA wins. They also have the best "Average" ranking of 8th place spot over their entire franchise life.

Looking at the majority of other franchises, as on average teams typically only last 3 or maybe 4 seasons at a consistent high ranking (1-4). There are a lot of "Peaks and valleys" for pretty much all teams.

Other stories the data tells:
  • Boise has never finished ranked higher than 21st, and Wichta 19th.
  • Edmonton is on track to grab its first 1st place ranking if it can hold on in 2040.
  • The following teams have never finished ranked #1 - Charm City, Chicago, Des Moines, Long Beach, Edmonton, San Antonio, Twin Cities, and the above two mentioned Boise & Wichita.
Take a look at it, poke around, see how your franchise fared....

Every one of the original 24 franchises has had at least one season where they had the worst record in the league. Phoenix is the longest running franchise that has never bottomed out.

Dating back to 2006, 10 different teams have finished on top twice, only Las Vegas has finished with the best record more than twice.....they have finished first EIGHT TIMES over that span.

If Edmonton and Vegas help me out, here, we might break that log jam.

Long Beach (as Salt Lake City) had the best record in the inaugural 1973 season.
