2040 - Stretching Singles to Outs...

Post by RonCo » Sat Oct 26, 2019 1:10 pm

On April 14th, in the top of the second inning, newly acquired Jim Des Jardine stepped up to the plate for my Yellow Springs Nine, and flared a looper into short center field. Portland’s Bing-zhang Kim couldn’t field it, and it went for a base hit. Des Jardien, feeling his oats, and seeing the ball get away, made the turn and headed for second, whereupon Kim gunned him out.

Dumb base running, surely.

But it’s the kind of detail that’s starting to come out of the game when we start looking at the game log data gathering system I’ve got going. To be honest, I added this piece to the script after reading part of a thread on the mainline OOTP forum, and the results were interesting enough that I posted them there. A little later, someone came up with some useful information on how the real game is being played, which then suggested that this aspect of base running isn’t maybe quite so perfect.

Yeah, lots of words there.

What it really means is that I went and did a bunch of more detailed work to feed back to the developers, and since it’s interesting in weird ways that all things OOTP are interesting, I figured I’d post it here for you lucky guys. Heh.

My main caveat here is that, as far as I can figure, this is just for the pure fun of seeing what’s happening on the field—meaning I can’t think of any way to really use this data in any directed way to make your team better or worse (beyond the purely obvious idea of thinking about the value of “baserunning” and “arm” and stuff like that, which is already in our tool boxes). But, again, I think these things are fun to see (and as an aside, they are the types of things that showing them to Markus/Matt helps make future versions even better).

So, there…

Anyway, through June 1 the BBA has had 19 runners thrown out at second trying to stretch a single into a double. Here are the details of those times…

Here are a few things I found interesting:

(1) Essentially every case of a runner out stretching a single to a double is happening on a popup in shallow outfield. (There are no singles off the wall that get played into OF assists at second).
(2) Every case is a fly ball that drops.
(3) Almost every case are substandard base runners—so speedy/good runners don’t seem to be taking many chances. I admit I don’t know what this means
(4) 15 of the19 are in the first 6 innings, which seems reckless (but I admit I have no idea if that’s wrong).

To show you the results noted in (1) above, here’s a marked-up zone diagram…
