2040: Baserunning Daredevil-try Exposed!

After reading a question on the main OOTP board, I got to wondering if I could use my script to study baserunning—you know, advancing from first to third and whatnot. It turns out the answer is “probably.” Or at least “partially.” I’ve got some additional thinking to do when I get some time, but for right now all I could look at is the question of how often runners get thrown out at each base. So, that’s what I did.

I ran through all the game logs--through April 28th for now--and counted up the times that runners tried to advance and were thrown out. (I should caveat this by acknowledging this is an “early code” feature of my script, so there’s always a chance I’ve got a bug or I’m missing some game log entry that’s different from the rest).

Realize there’s at least one big problem here—that being I have no idea how many times runners attempted to advance and were successful. So you have to read this with a gentle grain of sale. For example, I’m mortified to see YS9 tied with Charm City at the upper side of this with 12 baserunners erased—second highest in the league behind Atlantic City. However, we do have the second best on base percentage of any team in the Frick League, so we probably do get more opportunities to get tossed on the base paths.

That’s my story, anyway. It sounds good in the press.

A couple interesting bits to think about:
  • The league has had nine guys thrown out stretching singles into doubles.
  • The league has had 58 guys thrown out at third base.
  • The league has had 158 guys thrown out at home.
It would be interesting to compare these rates to MLB, so if anyone knows where to get your hands on that data in an easy fashion, I’d be much obliged…

Anyway, here’s the team-by-team breakout.

Or fire the 3rd base coach. (You're welcome for the team news idea.)

Hmm. I’m not surprised I have the second lowest total (2) as I rarely have men getting on base to get thrown out.

Here's a better update after 55ish games in both UMEBA and BBA...it's quite interesting if you stare at it a little--especially the difference in the UMEBA game and the BBA game...which shows how outputs here a result of players as much as settings?

Lol maybe that explains why my offensive scoring is so low. Trying to go to home on a single.

J-Crew only team in BBA not to be thrown out at any base but home! +21

Curious if you could parse the game logs to see how many of the outs at home were the 3rd out of the inning and those at 3rd were the first or last out of the inning.

Great insight!!

I've actually tried to get my guys to be more conservative on the base paths with this info. OOTP has us 16th in the JL so looks like I need to adjust some more.
