2058 - Staff Salaries Around the BBA

Post by RonCo » Mon Apr 01, 2024 3:57 pm

So I was doing my semi-annual scan of BBA coaching staffs, and got interested in what teams were paying their staffs as a whole--as one does. That got me to looking at the pay structure by position...and that got me looking to where each team was in my division and in my league. And, of course, that led to this.

Below, see a breakout of the salaries associated with every staff position in the league, broken down by division.

As always, I'm not sure what to make of it simply because I'm never sure what to make of anything when it comes to coaching. I'm sure is makes a difference. How much of a difference? I dunno. That's why they pay us the big Brewster bucks, right? To make that kind of assessment?

Anyway, here are the numbers as they stand at this moment. All cash numbers are annual salaries.

Atlantic Division

ATCATL$380,000$1,280,000$135,000$565,000$795,000$245,000$165,000$370,000$3,935,000

RCKATL$350,000$2,280,000$450,000$400,000$700,000$270,000$105,000$335,000$4,890,000
It's probably no surprise that the Breum boys in Montreal are spending more on staff than anyone else in the division (and, to be clear, the league as a whole). What's more interesting is that Brooklyn is #2. And when it comes to the standings, well, Brooklyn is ... not Montreal. I note that Brooklyn's big spend is in the AGM slot, which I find interesting.

New Orleans and Charlotte are on this skimpy end when it comes to spending on the staff, with Atlantic City closeby.

This is as good of time as any to note that salary does not have to equal quality. But, of course, it can. I'll leave it to you guy to do your own sweat-equity on that question. :)

First and foremost...Mexico City has a slot to fill, which I think is interesting because it doesn't show up on the StatsPlus report for missing personnel. Someone should probably report that to the StatsPlus guys. Anyway, while we wait for that to get dealt with, a look at the division sees Boise leading the league in $ spent on their manager. Calgary's AGM is the priciest in the division, but it's offset by having the cheapest pitching coach in the gang (Cristobal Hernandez -- a pretty good one!).

At $2.7M in total outlay (and with their trainer making the top salary), Rocky Mountain has the second cheapest big league staff in the game, behind only the Pacific's San Fernando.

Ultimately I'm struck by how similar a lot of these teams are in their cash outlay.

Without looking, I would have predicted Nashville would lead the Heartland in money spent on infrastructure, but that's not even a little right. THe Bluebirds are down at 6th, including spending only $500 on their manager. Of course, that's about 10x what Chicago is shelling out for theirs. At $65K, legacy hire Rocky Wattson is by far the lowest paid manager in the BBA.

Twin Cities and Des Moines carry two of the higher paid pitching coaches in the BBA. Omaha one of the most expensive hitting coaches.

On a personal note, I'll note once again that Bikini has been revamping our staff, and that this listing has changed a bit for us over the span of the season. It is what it is now, though. So ... similarly, I know San Fernanado fired and hired a manager. Even at that, "bear"ly sneaking over $2M, the Bears have the cheapest staff in the game.

Looking at hitting and pitching, the Bears (and Hawaii) are spending only ~$200K per slot, and define the bottom of the Pacific. Valencia defines the surface, at just over $1M per position.

--------

To reiterate, $ != Quality. And I'd love to be able to develop a really good system of experiments to determine what affect each coach has on results. That would be great. Of course, you could say that about real baseball, too. I mean, statisticians have been trying to determine the value of coaching for a long time. So let's not read too much into this. Still it's fun. And it's interesting. Something to keep in mind as one goes about trying to flesh out their coaching staff, anyway.

Hey, $500k to manage the Bluebirds after winning a contest is a pretty good gig!

Every dollar I save on the coaching staff can be spent on coke and hookers for the players.

great post! Unfortunately the whole coaching staff part of the game to me is just throwing darts at a board. No discernible correlation between money spent and results, and no discernible correlation between the skills of the staff and what results from their labor. I am probably wrong of course.

For Managers I look for Handles development and aging.

Pitcher coach Teach Pitching

Hitting Coach Duh

Base coaches just the usual teach running and positions

It's a fight to get the best when you're competing with 32 GMs for 160+ slots. You can end up spending a boatload of cash.

It gets way worse when coach poaching is happening. I was in a league where a bunch of the league was spending over a million dollars for each Rookie league coach just so they wouldn’t leave the first time somebody offered them a different position.

Upper minors and major league coaches were getting even more ridiculous salaries.

I don't find coaching particularly interesting so I wouldn't want it to become tedious due to poaching. I like figuring out my minor league depth so I enjoy injuries (even if that could also be described as tedious).
