This is all awesome stuff, but I was hoping to find some discussion and talk on handling of bullpens. I am having major fits in trying to set the right roles that gives me the right usage I want back. Currently I use the stopper role for 2-3 guys, if it's three I make one 8th inning and later and the other two 7th and later. Then one long relief designation. The rest I set middle relief, normal usage. I also do 25 pitch count for all relievers except the long guy and force sit under 75%. Still, I'm generally getting one of the stoppers soaring far above the others in IP and the long reliever is overused. Middle relievers tend to all be balanced in usage but still at times used more than one of the "stoppers". If there are other threads I'm missing, my apologies and I'd be grateful to be turned in the right direction.

I think you've gotten about as far as the rest of us. I've done 2 stoppers and 3 stoppers and sometimes I get balance and other times one gets far more IP than the others. Before the stopper role was available, I used to do all middle relief and set the best 2 guys to high leverage as their second roles and got really good distribution of important innings out of that, but I couldn't funnel innings to my best relievers like the stopper situation seems to allow for.

I think what happens is that the roles you set only go so far in that OOTP will still try to use the better arm when possible, so there may be some games to play with roles in terms of gaming the in game GM.

Thanks for the reply!

I've thought recently about just setting all of the bullpen to middle relief, normal usage and do some testing as to how the AI then will distribute the usage. I read somewhere else that in this scenario the AI will favor your best pitchers in the late innings. I'm in a once a day live sim league and it's not an issue because I can adjust roles and force sit guys as needed but for 7 day sims it's becoming an obsession to find the right plan!

I’ve been running two stoppers this season. I’m the beginning I had my other relievers split between MR and LR, but I had very few innings spread between the MR. Don’t have any clarity for you, I’m afraid.

I am currently running 2 "Closers" that also have their secondary roles as Setup and it is working very well. The rest of my pen is all set to Middle Relief. I did the same configuration last year and had alot of success. I also had some trouble trying to figure out the best way to set my pen in the past with varied success and failure.

My conclusion is get five starters who pitch CG shutouts on a nightly basis.

Why didn't I think of this strategy, brilliant!

Preferably no-hitters too, then you don't need to worry about defense either. Makes your life a whole lot easier.

Do you set both closers as "8th inning onward" or stagger them?

It kind of depends for me. I've staggered two, I've staggered three, and I've had two on both 7th and 8th. Today I go with 8th but that's partially because I want to push some more innings to my second tier guys and protect the top two from injury a bit.

8 or later for both

Everyone else is set for normal usage, but i do have one guy who has a secondary role of long relief

I just checked out the one on catchers. Is there anyway to improve your catchers defense in the current game?

I have Yazîcîzâde on my roster with a 3 defensively, but it shows potential up to a 6. He didn’t budge last year. Any way to see him improve?

Hired a new coach this offseason. The guy I had last season had excellent for teaching catching. Guy I hired is outstanding.

Tell him to drop all those carot signs in his name. That'll lighten his load.

How much playing time did they get? From what I've seen in my other leagues, catcher takes a bit longer to learn in '23 and requires more reps than it did in earlier versions.
