2038 Uber-Picks, Reprise

Post by RonCo » Mon Jun 03, 2019 4:13 pm

After the big gasp of a draft last season, I’ve taken to go back and check out where the very cream of the crop are. Specifically, I’ve taken a review of every player who entered the draft with an “80” overall (there were 23 of them), and checked where their prime ratings are.

I should note that the draft was in June of this year, and seeing that we are now in October, that means a total of four game months have passed. A few overview notes:

1 – Five of 23 have taken some kind of developmental hit (22%)
2 – Two have taken some kind of developmental bump (8%)
3 – Only one (Las Vegas’s Rafael Flores) appears to be dramatically less valuable than prior to the draft.
4 – Most of these guys are, obviously, still pretty far down in their organizations.

So, in the end, it’s still quite early to be making any real assessments about the actual impact this huge class is going to have, but there are early signs that the development engine is wearing some of the class down.

To be honest, however, I’m almost surprised it hasn’t been a bit worse—though, again, we’re talking four months. Do some pure math and extend this to a full year and maybe we’d see that 22% erosion rate reach 66%. I don’t know. And in the end, if development erosion is only as deep as it’s been, then it’s hard to call that too worrisome (Don Smith is “only” 10/9/10? Cry me a freaking river!).

I thought it was interesting, though.

So, of course, since I thought it was interesting, you had to get a feature. :)

Shimizu is showing a pretty drastic R/L split at the moment. His ability to hit RHP is coming along nicely and probably ready for a pretty hefty promotion up the Minor League ranks. Based on where he is now and obviously assuming no changes occur his ETA may be as soon as 2040 or 2041.

Thanks for this, Ron. I'd love to see how this group looks this time next year, and the year after, and the, well ... you get it.

How much of an outlier is 23 80-grade potential draftees? Roughly how many 80-grade prospects are in a typical BBA draft class?

It's a rather big outlier. There was a large amount of debate around it. (Looks around sheepishly). The GB folks have looked into it extensively and seem to have some corrections in mind.

As Ted said, while we have had a fairly deep draft for some time, this one was a pretty big outlier...hence the focus. :)

We spent considerable time looking at it. And, yes, we have a plan. Here's an over-view statement: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=28143

Has there ever been a comparison of HS to College players in the draft? I tried to do a quick search but didnt come up with anything.

If there has been, it was before my time, which means it's invalid now. Given that our kids come in extremely young, the "college" kids now are basically one year older than high schools kids were traditionally. Older is still better in terms of certainty with development, but when your "old" draftees are 19, it's not the same as when high school kids were 18 and college kids were 20-21. The aging curves are what they are.

Traditionally, it works as you'd expect. Older, more developed prospects develop at a much more reliable rate. Before our classes got young, you didn't need to do any rigorous analysis to see that this was true. They also had more limited upside, which is also typically the case. There are of course, the exception. A 21 year old that is developed like a 17 year old is concerning. Or any pitcher with a low rated change up. OR a player with one tool that is lagging far behind the others. You just have to know the patterns of what is bad. Power and control lagging behind is not great, but acceptable. Those are "older" skills. But stuff not coming along while the other two are developed and the player is 21-22 is bad. Eye not showing up at aa reasonable rate means it probably won't. CON almost never fails to develop along with other skills, but if it doesn't, that's really concerning.

As much as I complain about OOTP, I can't say too much that is bad about the aging and development curves. If you don't mess with the talent pool and player creation modifiers too much, they work really well with a good facsimile of real life.
