HOF Analysis: DH

Post by usnspecialist » Sat Apr 20, 2019 1:09 pm

Shown below is a chart of all of the Designated Hitters enshrined in the BBA HOF, along with their career stats. The green filled box indicates they are above their positional average, the red or white indicates they are below the average.

This chart shows how far away from the average each player is at a given stat. 1.00 is exactly the mean, higher numbers are good, lower numbers are bad. This is not a perfect chart because it gives every stat the exact same weight, which isnt exactly accurate but it gives a decent picture of what we are looking at.

I wouldn't have guessed Frank Thomas III would have the fewest HRs in the DH list, especially if you've told me the distribution of At Bats.

He played the vast majority of his career in a ballpark that depressed home run output.

I don't know what he'd have done in a neutral park.

I feel like I looked into this at one point when we were discussing his chances to get to 500 in a milestones podcast quite awhile back. I think the number I came up with was that he was short around 70-80 homers from a neutral environment. That was back when he was around (and possibly just under) 400 homers or so.
