HOF Analysis

Post by usnspecialist » Fri Apr 19, 2019 4:13 pm

So after hearing the challenge thrown down by Ron and Justin on the TWITB podcast, I decided to accept and (being me) took it up a notch. I have compiled the stat lines for all hitters in the HOF (pitchers to come over the holiday weekend hopefully), and decided to do a full blown analysis of the HOF. I looked at every hitter who was in the HOF for their BBA contributions (a grand total of 82), and got their career BBA totals in the following categories:

Games
AB
HITS
2B
3B
HR
RBI
RUNS
WALKS
STRIKEOUTS
WAR
SB
TIMES ON BASE
TOTAL BASES
EBH

Additionally I went thru and calculated how many times each player achieved the following honors:

SILK
ZIMMER
ASG
PUCKETT (only voted since 2020)
LANDIS
ROUND MVP (unknown start date)

I plan on making this a multi-post series where I break down each position and analyze the following features for each individual position:

-Mean of each statistic
-How each player currently in the HOF falls above/below the mean
-How current players stack up in relation to the mean

If there are any other suggestions for things you would like to see analyzed, please let me know and I can take a look. Of note, for SP I will be calculating the mean both with and without Steve Nebraska, because well he is an artificial freak and would destroy the average for everyone.

Ohhh boy this is good stuff! I think it also is going to help break down the question of what is required to get into the hall of fame.

Interesting stuff.

Another thing that might be interesting is what percentage of players with 1 ASG are in the hall. 2 ASG, etc. all the way up to Puckett and his 19 ASG to see where the natural break point is. Not sure how to get all this data, but if I had the raw data I’d be willing to crunch it.

If anyone has players they want analyzed, let me know and I can see if I can whip something up real quick. I'm working on the pitching list now and hope to have that up in the next few days.

if anyone has any players (retired or active) that they want me to calculate in and see where they stack up in comparison, please post on the individual positions threads that I have made and I will put it together.

I just wanted to point out an error in thinking that I often make, and I wonder if lots of people don't. IF you look at a "mean" as a cutoff, that means that your cutoff will endlessly rise. You will only take players above the mean. Someone below the mean has to be selected if you don't want to become increasingly elite. Now, if you think the bar isn't high enough (you darned small hall guys) go ahead and raise it. But I just think that this error of thinking is easy to make and worth talking about.

I like this overall, though.

It would be work, but I think it would be a great value to create a little Excel/Googl-Doc tool that would essentially place each new candidate into what slit they would hold if inducted. I could see that as a side-car part of Candidate Discussion Threads.

Regardless, I've already twisted Randy's arm on steps to incorporate this stuff into the Hall of Fame Threads. Same thing with Chris's Pantheon stuff...which could actually combine to help us see strata inside the Hall Members. We're getting enough history and a big enough group of players involved that this kind of thing would make for fun stories.

All of this is already in a spreadsheet and I have started putting in guys at various different positions. Hope to have updates posted in a few days. I will also be adding in JAWS scores for those that have it available
