As the playoff continue, and the league sees the 2037 season slip into the rearview mirror, I’ve started playing with simple numbers—you know how I can get—and today the simplest of numbers is runs scored and runs allowed. Yes, I know. Simple ideas for simple minds. But in looking at them, I came across an interesting little tidbit. Let me ask you this: who are the four most dominant teams in the league right now? Stop for a moment, and as yourself that question now...don't look anything up...just run the teams off the top of your head. Go ahead ... I'll wait ...
If you’re like me, you probably go straight to California, San Fernando, Rockville, and Jacksonville, with an Omaha kicker due to their mega-power lineup.
And you wouldn’t be far off.
But I did a simple little exercise of Pythagorean nature, and plotted each BBA team’s runs scored and runs allowed—along with a simple divider that ran along the 45 degree line that represents perfect balance. At the end of the day, this idea is that we’ll see the most dominant teams are the ones who are the farthest from this line. In other words, you can “dominate” by scoring runs or by preventing them.
When I do this, it’s not a total surprise that four teams separate themselves, and the Rockville (855 RS, 645 RA) put forward what is arguably the most dominate performance of the season. It’s almost no surprise at all that the Crusaders (733 RS, 587 RA) and Bears (1,014 RS, 801 RA) are almost identically powerful, but in mirror images regarding pitching and offense. Jacksonville, however, doesn’t make the show, and as the Ted and Randy show noted, Omaha has been incredibly lucky this year…they aren’t even close.
So much for my gut instinct, eh?
No…the fourth most dominant team this year is Chris Robillard’s Edmonton Jackrabbits (826 RS, 655 RA). Here's the chart:
Of course, I suppose that a sane person could just look at the pyth records and be done with it, but I liked looking at the data in graphical form because it makes it clear just how each dominant team is structured. How will this bode for the playoffs? Who knows? But a betting man might not throw Edmonton out of the mix.
Here’s the full list of teams if you want to play “connect the dots.”

Yesss. I love graphical charts that show I am doing better than everyone else.

Re: 2037 Domination – Who Ya Got?
Honestly, I didn't expect me to be so high on there. I thought maybe the best I'd be is swap Jax and I. I'm glad my team performed well this season, but I think there's a lot of luck involved too. I stayed mostly injury free this season. Take away the Chet Parrish injury in August (which he is back right in time for the playoffs, first start since his injury was against Omaha) and the Declan Crauen injury at the beginning of the season and the only other gameplan altering injury I had was Dong-soo Chon for several weeks if I remember correctly. Very lucky.
edit: oh and Dalrymple got injured too. I still feel like a lot of other teams had bigger injuries than me, so I still feel very lucky to be in the playoffs. Omaha is a great team. In order to win tonight, we need a some great performances. I'm excited.

Re: 2037 Domination – Who Ya Got?
Omaha was lucky from a sequencing and run differential standpoint, but horribly unlucky from an injury standpoint. They're going to be really hard to figure out for next year. If the roster that played most of this season plays next year (i.e. the injuries continue) I don't expect them to even be .500, but if they are healthier, then they might be the front runner for the division. It's really difficult to project all those big players of theirs that missed significant time.

For what it is worth I have a spreadsheet I have been working on that has Z scores for every team in the modern era for every category listed on the HTML season recap pages (as well as the raw totals). I'm planning on doing a feature on it hopefully this weekend (already weekend there thanks to Arabic being fri-sat), but there are some interesting results both in terms of this season and all time.
