Milestone and Leaderboard Watch #4

New Shiny Numbers
ImageScouts think Ralph Benson is over the hill. They've noted a decline in his hitting tool and a sapping of his once top end speed. No one has apparently told Benson, as he keeps putting up .400 OBP after .400 OBP. He might be slightly down this year, but is still a very good top of the order option for Seattles's pair of all-world middle of the order bats. A decade of playing in front of them has helped him reach 1000 runs scored at the age of 33. Fittingly, he was driven in by Juan Escobar for number 1000 after reaching on a single to lead off the inning. The feat occurred on June 4th while visiting the longtime rival Calgary Pioneers. The Pioneer faithful, after a decade of watching this same sequence, gave the Monticello, Kentucky native a standing ovation after he crossed the plate.

Image Speaking of The Mustache, Seattle's three time Silk Winner is making a strong case for his 4th. He's up to 71 RBI on the year, including career number 1000 on June 7th against the visiting Long Beach Surfers. In the bottom of the first, Escobar launched a two run home run to deep left, plating Jorge Garza for number 1000 (and himself for 1001). The victim? Longtime Seattle hurler Ed Davis, who was let go in the offseason and recently picked up by the injury riddled Surfers. The 38 year old vet who made a living off limiting hard contact for 15 years with the Storm, commented, "I had no chance. When Mustache stepped into the box, I knew he was going to get me. Guy's watched me for 10 years. Knows all my tricks. Hats off to him. Heck of a player."

ImageHold on Genius, you aren't done yet! Manny Bautista struck out his 2000th batter on June 10th while visiting his longtime division rival Valenica Stars. The veteran southpaw struck out six on the night, the first of which sat down 27 year old Ricardo Guzman on swinging strikes. The pitch was of course his signature change-up, which the veteran had the presence to throw on a 3-2 count.

ImageCesar Martinez pitched in his 700th game on June 9th. The 33 year old righty took the mound in the top of the 9th in a 9-4 yawner of a loss for the Wolves. Hardly any fans were in the stadium at the time of the accomplishment, as it was a beautiful Saturday afternoon and many decided they had better things to do after the Kernels made it 9-1 in the top of the 7th. Somehow it was fitting for Martinez, who despite a career 3.79 era and 212 saves has toiled away in obscurity for the large part of his time in the big leagues (apologies B-Ham).

Chasing History
After a couple years where players chased records, it's starting to seem like this will be an infrequently updated section of this publication.

Hitter Milestones

Hits
Looks like the Twin City River monsters have decided they have nothing better to do than play Bo Jordan. A shell of his former self, Jordan is only 12 away despite a .217 avg. His new teammate Jason Dunn is seeing some PT too, as he is only 37 away. The third player has been all over these rankings in recent years, and is holding on well at age 36. Kal El will need a remarkable year to get to 2500 hits, but is only 126 away.

Chasing 2500
Jordan 12
Dunn 37
El 126

Chasing 2000
Bryan Vogel 43 - injured
Jorge Rodriguez 52
Ralph Benson 83
Jared Davis 99 - unsigned
Phil Chapman 125 - injured
Emilio Rodriguez 126
Gilberto Pacheco 138

Home Runs
Antonio Sanchez has already gotten to 400 this year, as has
Seattle great Jorge Rodriguez.Lewis Stephens has been picked up and resumes his chase for 400. He's already sent his first one over the fence since coming back.

Chasing 400
Lewis Stephens 6

Chasing 300
No one likely within 30 as of now.

Runs
Bo Jordan is 56 runs from 1500. This almost certainly will not happen.

Chasing 1000
Emilio Rodriguez 10
Rafael Bido 36
Boone Carlyle 43

RBI
Bunch of big names getting close. Already Sandcastle, Cano, and Excobar in the books. The aging Martin Felix has caught on in Indy and is back in the race.

Chasing 1000
Rob Childers 6
Martin Felix 12
Esteban Contreras 16
Rafael Bido 29
Boone Carlyle 51
Diego Moreno 68
Bruce Wayne 68

Walks
With Thomas III making his mark, we likely won't see any base on ball milestone unless someone picks up Stephens.

Chasing 1000
Lewis Stephens 5

Stolen Bases
Mario Soriano 42 for 500
Roberto Miranda 13 for 450
Tony Banuelos 37 for 400
Benjamin Franklin Pierce 2 for 350
Valentin Colon 32 for 350
Manuel Garcia 5 for 300
Leon Sandcastle 15 for 300

Pitcher Milestones

Wins
Mingo Boone got win number 200 last year. This year he could be joined by longtime division rival and Carolina Kraken member Billy Chapel Jr.

Chasing 200
Billy Chapel Jr. 8

Strikeouts
It could be a really big year for the Kraken's King of K, as Chapel Jr. also closes in on 3000 strikeouts, a milestone we haven't seen in quite some time. He's only 16 disgusted batters from the elite mark.

Chasing 2000
Jon Chandler 106
Martin Lewis 135

Saves
Skip Glendenning 4 for 500
Bob Sanderson 34 for 300

Games
Skip Glendenning 6 for 900
Ricardo Valera 27 for 700

Movin On Up
Image
Hector Cano is now the active home run leader and the only player currently chasing some kind of immortality. He now has 564 homers for his career. He's passed Long Chamberlin and Alberto Guzman for 8th all time. He really seems to have declined since the second half of last year, but has played well to start 2029. A 25 HR year, which seems reasonable, would put him 8th all time, and 21 short of 600. While it once looked likely he would reach that make, at this point I'd call it a coin flip.

Image
Bo Jordan's is at this point a novelty for the expansion River Monsters. He's solidly behind Cano, and may not even get the 10 home runrs he'd need to catch Chamberlain at 560.

Bo Jordan still is the active leader in total bases, and couple climb up another spot or two depending on how much PT he gets. He's up to 4745 total bases, making him 15th all time. He's passed Al Jones and probably won't get to Al Guzman at 4923.

Bo Jordan has now succumbed to Cano for the RBI lead among active players. Cano is 20th all time, with 1536. He's also passed Terry Cochran, Brock Lee, Kevin Haubert, and Fred Mahaffey. Cano would need 3 more RBI to get to 19th. Jordan is at 1519, good for 23rd.

We'll have to wait for the great swing and miss-a-thon to continue as Bryan Vogel starts the year on the DL. He has 2604 for his career, in sole possession of 5th all time. He only needs to walk back to the dugout with his bat in his hands 92 more times to be second all time.

Catcher Jason Dunn may be the all time leader in games caught for one franchise. It is hard to tell with the fuzziness of the stat keeping before the modern era. He caught in 2161 games for the Valencia Stars, with 2131 starts, for a grand total of 18,256.1 innings. A cursory look at the games played leaders, seems to indicate that no one is even close to having caught that many innings for a single club. He's NOT the active leader in games played. That would of course be Bo Jordan, at 2367, who is nearly a full season's worth of games outside of the top 20.
ImageMingo Boone has 205 wins, and is the active career leader. He's currently 30th all time, but a year ending injury will prevent him from climbing any higher this year. He just passed Justin Alexander Sr. Jim Schmidt (206) and Eddie Harris (208) are next.

ImageSkip Glendenning has saddened me greatly as it seems his career might be coming to an early close. He's now in sole possession 4th all time in saves passing Paul Hogan, Chris Malone, Juan Quintero, and the great Jonathan Sorensen. Should he hold on for a 40 save year, he'll be third all time passing Justin Marco, but will need another full season to get close to 2nd.

ImageBilly Chapel Jr. is the active strikeout leader, and should get to 3000 this year. When he does, he will be the 24th pitcher to reach that mark. However, with a typical 240 strikeout year, he could crack the top 20, knocking out Chris Stoller.

Yawn

Another week, another milestone

We are either extremely great or extremely old

On another note

Gotta Love that bulldog Lewis, it's too bad he's spent his entire career on wretchedly bad teams

He'd be a long t better than .500

Only if he has another ten years left in his career and he plays them all for a powerhouse like Louisville
